The Combo Club

Not as much whining about the smaller speaker, as you’ve proven, Doggie, that the ‘lil VOX works its magic playing out, but I’ll be disappointed if I end up spending almost four bills and can’t use it with a group of mixed acoustics and electrics. Also, no DI means if you run line out to the PA you lose the Nutube tone and ability to use it as a monitor. I need to hear and play it, I guess.

To this old man (ETA: that old man is me), it seems one is paying ~$150 to revisit in a Liliputian way the past. YMMV, of course.

ETA: It's not the 8" speaker that's giving me pause, to be sure.

I have a pal who needed I think two Yellow Pages phone books under her to take a spin in her Golf.

ETA: I don't recall exactly how she dealt with the floor pedals, but there was a balance between seeing the road and making the thing go and whoa.

There is a joke I have here that's probably best not to repeat. I know a few of those....

I'm a bit perplexed as to why Oh Why did Vox put an 8" driver in that cabinet instead of two 8" or a 10".
There's practically no advantage to have an amp+head configuration, especially when you're paying more for it.

The head would be good with at least two drivers, and they messed that up by making the cabinet 4 Ohms.

Get that head & plug it into a Rumble 4x10" & it would probably be magical!

Erroll Garner would sit on the Los Angeles phone book on his piano bench (the LA phone book is in two volumes), and he regularly played 10th intervals... what were we talking about again?

....I think Violent Femmes lyrics: 'Big hands, I know you're the one'.

I did not know that about Errol Garner. In terms of breadth and depth of knowledge, it's hard to top TalkBass.

[Gasp!] No DI on the Mini SuperBeetle[sic]?!?! Not even the Pre-only DI of the VX50BA?? MAN! The VX50BA is looking better all the time!! Another triumph for combos!

Hmmm, . . . . Ladies and Gentlemen! Hurry, hurry, hurry! Step right up. Let me introduce to you the one and only Vox Mini EarlyBeetle available from the G-Doghouse of Music for just $349.99! Now don't push or shove there's plenty for everyone. . . . .

Here’s a reference to his stature, you can find videos of him and with a sharp eye can sometimes see the books.

Ahh, here’s a photo with the Manhattan directory:

‘Dog, though I’m sure you became so excited when you read that there was no proper XLR out, you failed to read where I said it has the headphones/line out that would suffice to the PA, but lose the opportunity to serve as its own monitor. I forgive you though. Especially since you’re gonna sell me your VOX combo and nifty oven rack for only three-and-a-half.

Speaking of shorty's and basses... my better half sat in with Andrew "Vince" Venson for a couple of songs on Friday night. Paula's 5' even; she's a Brazilian pianist/songwriter originally from Rio de Janeiro (that's the shorty part). Andrew is playing a vintage ('61 or '62?) jazz bass through a Mark Bass head and cabinet... THICK tone! He leads the band "Vince and Friends" on voice and bass, playing sweet bass lines under his sonorous R&B vocals. Some folks might think of him as Jackie Venson's dad, but I've been seeing him play since the mid '80s when I moved to Austin. Also, at 75 years of age, he'll tell you he's happily retired, but people still follow him wherever he plays (that's the bass part).

I agree with you and like your thinking, but if I was gonna do that I’d wait until they sell the head alone.

VOX should’ve gone with 50 watts into 8 ohms and 100 into 4 ohms with two speaker outs on the amp. Then but their brand new 2 x 8 cab and have said 100 watts driving a 4 x 8 four eights. Nice! Yeah, KBD, your idea of two eights makes a lot more sense than a single eight. Why not a ten then?

Again, I’ll wait to hear the reviews but to get one to use I’m sure I’d have to buy it because I doubt it’ll make it the showroom. My man cave is full enough as it is, but I would’ve made space if the VOX is truly worth it.

Speaking of the Music Room, it’s ready for your viewing if you’re interested. Check below!

(I see no phone books.)

Stayed up late last night because I couldn’t stand knowing this was the last room at least started. I realized after putting almost everything up that I have too much stuff! So I began eliminating things I just didn’t want anymore, but it’s hard to do. Don’t move if you already know you’ve accumulated to much to pick up, box, move, unbox, and find a place for. My two pesos to the membership.

Yeah - I'm dreading dealing with a storage unit from one move ago. Both my wife and I are pack rats.
