By the inspiration of our Fearless Leader I took the li'l Vox VX50BA to the monthly Bluegrass (& Country) Jam today. The new state fiddle champion, and a few past champs, were there to ensure a splendid time for all! About 16 acoustic instruments on most songs, though 2-4 at a time took turns eating after the food was blessed.

I sarted out with all knobs at noon, but kept it on a tabletop right behind me instead of sitting it on the floor, as I used to do. Since it was so close to my ears I first turned down the tone on my bass to soften it up. My bass volume was around 4 out of 10, so as not to overwhelm any of the acoustic instruments. A song later I boosted the bass & lo mid to about 1:30 while cutting the treble & high mid to 10:30, and BOOM, there it is! A good low volume rich, warm tone. Then a couple guys on the other side of the big circle told me to turn it up, so I went to 5 on my bass. That worked well for the rest of the jam. One of the same guys told me to turn up a couple more times, but I just touched the volume knobs and gave him the "howzat?" look and he gave me the thumbs up, both times!

Oh, BTW, no Compressor, no Drive on. Now that I think about it, a little Drive might have helped a bit more. But, it sounded very deep and warm even without it, even though I certainly wasn't pushing the nutube preamp, probably, at all.

I now realize I've unfairly preferred the Rumble Studio 40 since getting it a few months ago. I will try to give the li'l Vox more play time in the future.

That jamboree you do sounds like the most fun in the world. Playing with those great musicians has to be a trip too.

I’m wondering instead of adding the Drive like you were kicking around afterwards, if pushing the Comp slider might’ve given the oldsters what they wanted, though it sounds as though you were quite happy with the tone.

You, 007, have given me the confidence to continue the fascinating journey with my Foxy Voxy!

Hey Doc. I know, duty called this past week and now it's back to full time. I hardly played a note but have the violin bass strapped to me as I write this for a little riffing before shuteye. The VOX is off to the side while I use the Ampeg, though I should be continuing stretching exercises for the speaker. I'm digging it so far, though I know I haven't hit Nirvana yet with the tone I'm expecting. It's very much a unique amplifier when comparing to my others, and I like that. It's like the famous British bulldog that's scrappy and never runs from a fight. If you read G'Pooch's diary entry earlier tonight you read what I'm expecting to hear in a month or so...if I get to play it!

You need to seriously pick one up, my friend. Knowing your tastes, I think you'd really like what it'll sound like with your Hofners. I wrote last week about the unique openness that my ears are hearing as I play through it. Almost like there's a reverb pedal running. Not overly wet, but just a sense that it's coming out of a bigger cab than a similarly-sized amp. I need someone to either verify that's what they're hearing or verify I'm nuts. I'm cool with it either way...

Save your Shekels, Doc. You need to be rocking the hollow-bodies with this VOX.

Likely a gift under the tree for sure! Thank you for the update. I'm glad you are still gripping the violin bass. I have been tonight too, but that is to be expected for me!

I'm back on Monday and then classes start the next week! Off to the races (marathon, really)!

I think that mean the P-Bass in the first picture, but there are two.

The Precision in the first picture is my ‘14 Honeyburst American Special. It was a Guitar Center Special Run. It is my #1.

The one is the last picture is my ‘18 Penny American Performer PJ.

The B-DEC was the reason that I bought the Bronco 40. I like them both.

Tad, I love my B-DEC, too, and was thinking of getting the Bronco 40 whenever it eventually broke. But, DANG (in a perverse kinda way), it never broke! But the siren song of the Rumble Studio 40 was just too much for me, and I finally succumbed to that. My B-DEC is still going strong, though, with my bass protegé playing it at least weekly, often more, in the church youth band! It's still a great li'l combo!!

How unfortunate that your carelessness must now be dealt with in such a beautiful Iowa Sunday, BUT we cannot tolerate such insolence here at the CC. What will the newbies think?

Your punishment will consist of 1) thoroughly clean M’s laundromat using only a toothbrush; 2) carry GP’s Kasino up three flights of stairs to his attic wearing only a blindfold, and 3) write up this week's 4th grade Science lessons so I can play more bass today. Then I’d say we’re even for today.
