The Combo Club

Good evening/morning/afternoon Combo Club! It is midnight here in Ohio, but I made sure I had a brain cell or two left from this day to scribe Day 1 of the Columbus Trip to you. I threw out a spoiler a few posts up mentioning that the trip went well, and other than being long (8:00 AM Iowa time to 6:00 PM Ohio time) it was uneventful. Now that doesn't mean the day didn't have a firecracker or two tossed in for good measure, and I'll get to those in a minute. Below are two pics taken, by Mrs. iagtrplyer, as we launched the USS Mercury Marquis. Oh it fit everything I brought, plus Pastor John's travel items and an acoustic guitar. Seriously, there may still be musical gear in that trunk, but we ran out of daylight while unpacking! View attachment 3101470
BTW, John is 6'2" and I'm 7'1". I sometimes use my bass as a bath brush when showering. Just kidding.

Pizza for lunch at a Casey's in Le Roy, IL, and pizza for an afternoon snack at a Marathon gas station in OH. Yeah, we like pizza. East Coast subs in Columbus tonight though. Had "The Big Kahuna" Philly cheese steak and boy, was it good. Giff, it's definitely NOT like a Vegemite sandwich, but I still like Men at Work.

So here's tonight's less-than-happy news: The band's main rhythm guitarist and lead singer of 16 of the 52 songs we're performing on Saturday will be a no-show due to the passing of a good friend of his. He'll be at the funeral at the same time the festival begins, and that threw us a curve ball as we found this out tonight. Greg, the guitarist feels terrible about not playing, but it reminds us all where we set our priorities. So tomorrow we're gonna re-vamp the set list, either taking those pieces out or replacing the lead singer with one of the other group members, but then losing one of the key harmony parts. I'm going to try and help there, but the blend won't be the same. It was a tough way to finish today, but we'll make it work.

John then find out he's going to be losing some festival workers and now has to find replacements two days before this all happens. That's life, but it still makes for added stress. Then on top of it, another parishioner's mother passed away recently and they're holding her funeral on Saturday at...guess what time? 10:00 AM. So he's going to spend extra time at her visitation on Friday to make up for missing the funeral. We're all just hoping no else passes away for the next 48 hours!

Finally, tomorrow's agenda includes revising the music, setting up the rig to see if everything works (ran the Jazz through the Rumble for a few minutes tonight and smiled), and rehearse around 6:00 PM. All I know is I'm pumped to play and can't wait. Day 3, here we come! The final pic below was taken to provide a comparison from the Day 0 shot. Talk to ya tomorrow night.

PS: to Giffro - thanks for the safe well wish in an earlier post. I am getting John to bless the PF-800 before Saturday, but the Rumble may get more action if we have fewer players. :bassist:

Boy oh boy are you guys on a road trip just like Bob and Bing's Road To...movies, except in your case its The Road To Columbus Ohio and a lot of sub-plot twists and turns along the way as well, by the sound of it.
Sorry to hear about the singer/guitarist failure to launch and the loss of festival staff plus the church members mum passing away. You couldn't easily write a script like that for a movie. At least you guys sound like your eating well along the way loll..pizza, pizza and oh yeah..more pizza. Right about here in my reply i'll insert a well known ditty to put a smile on ya dial...

Mrs. Mike did a good job of the trip pics as well..keep ya feet together too Mike cause I can see the rear wheel between ya legs..man oh man 7'1" and with bowed little legs like that my friend you could be captain of the tunnel ball team loll joking joking.. But what a good lookin' dude you are..Mrs Mike snapped up a killer bargain there.
You 2 fellas look like Jake and Elwood, the real blues brothers ready to take on the Festival when ya get there.
God bless you both you travelling minstrels, and enjoy the trip before coming back home safely to your Combo family, who I am sure are wishing you both a great trip.
It seems to me Mike that your final pic of the gear includes a lot more stuff than what you intended to take originally..all that gear plus a bunch of books, chairs and a musicians table...you boys really do travel to the hilt in style lolll..yeah yeah joking again.
We Combo Clubbers await your next installment to see if the PF-800 demons have been exorcised by Pastor John or your backup Rumble gets to move some air instead.
Have fun guys.
Giff and fellow CC members wish you well.

It's was great! I loved my tone, and it sounded nice alone and in the mix. I'm using a 69 Hofner 500/1 and two combos in sequence: a Vox 10 watt Pathfinder and a Peavey Max 115 (300 watt, supposedly). I call it the Vox and the Blackbox. We butchered some songs but we all enjoyed a lot anyway. This is a hobby for us, so I think the plan is to learn a set and host an open mic or something.

Some songs included:

Rockin in the Freeworld
Simple Man
New Year's Day
Louie Louie
Paranoid
New York Grove
Revolution
How Many More Times

Good times!
Well done Doc I. I hope you enjoyed yourself. I would have loved to buy one of those Hofners years ago (i'm actually building an el-cheapo copy of one from a kit form Aussie seller.) I love Peavey gear as I still own my gigging rig of 30 years..my MKIV head (300w@2ohms and 210w@4ohms with the 1x1820 cab)..that rig is a devil for punishment lol
It aint a worthy jam session without mucking up a song or 2 as long as its done with smiles all round...that's what makes the difference and ensures a fun time.
I'm envious Doc as i'm sitting around for at least the next month looking after my poor wife with her broken rib and foot..if my mates want me to fill in for any gigs in the coming month i'll have to pass..its real cold (13C) wet weather here at the mo. so im happy staying home with my beloved anyway loll...hope you had the time of your life Doc and I bet the jam sounded great.

Nice-looking ride, Morrighan, but I had no idea VW was building 4X12 cabinets. Neat! How do they sound? Germanic, I'll bet. Wait until you see what we drove in today. My nightly post is a coming.

Back then lots more people preferred the 2x10 from Datsun over the VW 4x12 .... The fatal glass of beer was powering the VW 4x12 with a Trabant head. The Trabant always fires up with a puff of smoke ....

Oh Mike btw I hope you didnt take offense about my quip relating to your legs in relation to being the captain of the tunnel ball team..lol Just to show you that you're not the only easy going guy who ends up the butt of other peoples humour (so to speak)..my wife is a computer graphics designer and made my avatar a few years ago. She thinks its a good representation of me..she's a funny woman my wife..although after looking at that darn thing again she got me pretty close to a real life Giff..sandals, sweat pants, T-shirt, not much hair left and that "like a deer caught in the car headlights" type of blank stare look lollll :roflmao::thumbsup::hyper::bassist:
Ok now Mike as you can see...the joke is on me..lol

Hey GP..was having a peek at a few peoples profiles and see you have a birthday coming up in a few weeks..again..lol..aint it grand..another good reason to be a grumpier old far* just like me loll You are a year younger than my best mate/lead guitarist/best man twice/and all round great guy..hes topped 74 and has more energy than my 67 years loll where do you older blokes get ya second wind..i'm still waiting loll
And Doc Intrepid I was looking at the US map and you don't live that far away, generally, from our illustrious traveling minstrel iagtrplyr (Mike). It would be pretty easy for a bunch of you guys living within a reasonable distance to each other to pick a central location and throw a BBQ and have a great weekend feed and have a get to know each other meet. GP and I would have a bit of a drive being he lives down there with the Gators and I live in Aust with the Crocs but hey a Combo Club BBQ is a darn good idea for some of you guys and girls. I'm sure Mike will try and organise something by Christmas or a New Year BBQ loll
MIKE..hope all is cruising along there in Columbus smoothly. We, your Combo Club Family, are all thinking of you and waiting for your next progress report.

Where does he live? I suspect the distance may actually be a two or three day drive.

There are few of us here in FL. Kinda spread out around the state. Some of us are individually spread out, too. Thanks(?)-LOL- for noticing I'm about to put 73 in the rear view mirror. BTW, I'm another Mike-we're everywhere!:)
Sorry to remind you of your upcoming birthday GP Mike. I seem to remember Australia is approx the same size in Width as the US and I guess that does make the US a very large country because of its Depth(Length) so its no wonder you guys are spread all over...Florida itself being a large enough state. My home town here in South Aust is Adelaide and that makes Austin Texas our sister city so my guess is that Adelaide is similar size/population/geography etc to Austin..i need to study maps more when I get my head outta my music..lol

That Ric sure looks good! Nah, I say the owner is holding up well too. My problem is I've always been tall and thin, but now the middle-age spread has caused the bowling-ball middle. No matter, it holds up my Jazz making it easier to play!

I'm about as far east as you can get in the state. We're as close to Chicago as we are to our state capital, Des Moines. Hmm...a bass players' BBQ? I can see it now: everyone brings a combo to play, the same as you bring a cold dish to a picnic, and we walk around plugging in to catch the vibe. Maybe even have door prizes like a brabd new Stage 800. Giffro, I bet you'd scrape up plane ticket money for that!

wooo seems so much closer looking at the map..then again I'm still converting kms to miles when I drive any distance and we have had kms/metric system for many many years..i grew up using the miles Imperial system..so Im hopeless at distances lol..thanks Doc.
I could be wrong. I'm just guessing, but I think I'm fairly close. Anyway, my mom would be angry if I drove past her to visit someone else!
