The Combo Club

So the talk about Vox got me sort of interested and doing some searches online. I was curious if the Nutube technology has actual tubes? Maybe a combo of tube preamp and solid state or class D power amp? I was looking at the Vox50 back late last year or early this year but ended up going another way.

Hey Protagonist! Not an actual tube in that sense of cathode ray legend, but a circuit that I believe is (was) used in fluorescent lighting that works like a tube with all the benefits, like thousands of hours of life, and without a few of the hindrances, like lots of heat. Google NuTube and you’ll find a bit of techno info about its creation.

There’s definitely a vintage vibe coming from it, but as always, it’s up to the listener and what they’re hearing. My Rogue Beatle bass loves my combo and two-piece rig, but I haven’t found the same amount of warm fuzziness with my P bass. I think there’s a small, but loyal following to the technology though. You’ll have to give ‘em a listen.

I'm a fan of the Vox NuTibe amps. I have the Mini Super Beetle, a VX50BA combo and a couple of the MV50 Nutube amps. The best tone I get is when I run the Vox Pathfinder as a preamp into a MV50CL amp.

Doc, how are ya? I’m through for two weeks. I’m guessing you’ve been done and have some time off? Enjoy the tone away from the grind. Maybe get some good playing in like I hope to do.

Protagonist, this is our longtime VOX expert. If he likes something you can take it to the bank. That and Hofners.

I’d still like to see a gigging version with NuTube as its centerpiece. Plus, a DI that uses the tube tone in it as well. Make a 125, 212, or 410 cab to go with and then we can compare apples to apples. These dinky 1 X 8s are fun to practice on, but aren’t going anywhere near even a Marshall combo.

Here's hoping Korg is listening...

It would be great if they could offer an amp with more watts, but mine can handle it. It keeps up with 6'7" drummer and two guitarists and we all have to wear ear plugs. Even though it is only 50 watts I have a bunch of drivers and a few things that boost the signal.

I'd be all over a foxy Voxy if there was a post-EQ DI.
Yeah, that would be great! The good thing about the pre-EQ DI is that it does not colour the amps I link the VX50BA to. I really mostly use that amp to bi-amp a dirty signal with the clean signal of the Vox hydrid. Sounds spectacular! As FL mentioned, the mini-superBeetle seems to have better tone overall.

Offer both pre- and post-EQ and all is right with the world

Hi guys - any numbers left ?
Here's my MB CMD121 and NY121 extension cab. I only have this setup - nice enough for me.

BB, nice to meet ya! You’re in luck today because I’m giving away free numbers in time for the holidays. Actually, they’re free all the time, but I have another player to add to the list today so consider it done.

Nice Markbass rig ya have there, and I’m spying Zoom’s new FX pedal on top. How are you liking it? I have the B1X on and have it sitting on a shelf collecting dust. I hope you’re getting more use out of yours.

I’ll be posting numbers this PM. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for taking me on board!
I like the B1X four (don't want a full board) @70€ it's a steal; the tuner is excellent and compressors & effects are usable but need some tweaking. Software interface is good.
Better then my analogue effects from the 80s that died.

Oooo, Mikie! I hope you're getting your pipes wrapped, or whatever. This Grumpy Old F:spit:rt Weather Alert sounds like "your neck of the woods"!

You folks might wanna get your brass monkeys indoors. We're scheduled for a 40 degree temp drop in the next 8 hours here.

Great posting today, folks. Keep it up as we head into the holiday portion of this week. I’m working I. The Honey-do list today, and boy, Honey has a lot for me to do! I’m currently taking a break from latrine duty to scribe this.

I’ll have s fun surprise for y’all later today/tonight. Just what you’d ask for Christmas if you still believed in Santa!

Think good thoughts.

PS: as Doggie mentioned, there’s a cold air swing coming in this evening that’ll bring temps to 15-degree highs for tomorrow. Currently in Eastern Iowa, it’s 61 and tonight’s low will be 9. No time like the present to fire up your all-tube amp to keep the house warm...
