The Combo Club

Greetings club members and gawkers! Wow, it looks as if everyone took a powder this past weekend. I thought I was maybe the only one, but obviously not. So we're ya'll gigging the weekend away? Give us the dirt if you remember. I was fortunate enough to sneak in exactly one hour of new-amp playing time after supper on Sunday evening. Better than nothing! First time for hooking up the Zoom B1Xon thru the Acoustic.TBH, I thought the amp sounded better alone; at least until the speaker loosens up more. Everything was boomy with too much bass no matter what patch I applied. My heart (and ears) was missing the Rumbler terribly. So I dropped the bass and lower mid-bass and things cleaned up, but I'm telling ya, if you know someone who doesn't have much coin but wants to sound like a bass player, it's still not a bad choice. As for articulation...the jury is still out. It needs more playing time to loosen it up, but I'm wondering if I'll lose the bottom-end dominance. I know, who cares? It's a $137 amp. I have mentioned that before, right? Still sounds like a BA-series amp too.

Okay, so what's up with everyone else? Check in and be recognized by our club guard, G-Dog. Hey, he's got the time and enjoys greeting member when they come in. What can I say?

PS: Giff, where the heck are ya? Sheesh, even Kansas gets service faster than Down Under!
Our group had a gig at a country club restaurant/lounge Friday night. Playing conditions are tight but the people like us and.............oh....wait......that was the gig we booked months ago and then got cancelled 3 weeks ago after the other gig that paid twice as much-that we hadda turn down-was also booked, so we didn't do spit.:banghead:

I got to load all my stuff (including my Eden Nemesis RS410 combo), cut a poker game short (I was winning...), and show up at a gig where there was a VERY specific load-in time just so I could watch another band load in. Yes...the old double booked trick. This is a dive bar in a nice, upscale town. We had over a dozen friends show up, see we weren't playing, and leave. Apparently there's a power struggle of some kind going on between the original owner and a new investor recently brought in to try and save the place. They're urinating on bands right and left. Local "experts" in bar operations say the place won't last another 6 months. Would have been our first gig in this venue and on that side of town. We won't be playing there until ownership changes.

Yeah, we've had one other place do that to us. We won't go back unless we get the $ up front-that is b4 we drive up there and we're pretty certain they won't do that. The place is a PITA anyway.

I see Commissioner Gordon used the Morrighan signal

That would be me with the VT Bass Deluxe in my signal chain. In fact it is the only pedal in my signal chain. There are plans a-foot to add yummies like a HPF and compressor blah blah woof woof but the VT Bass goes with me every time.

Now there is a particular lemonade stand with a backline of an SWR (can't recall exactly which) driving a 15. I plug in my 'Ray and the drummer says: turn it up. Well shiver me timbers, I ask around TB what the sam hill happened and the wiser heads agree: it's the SWR scoop.

Bring my VT Bass Deluxe the next time and plug in the same backline at the same volume level. It's the little red light on the pedal that tells me to go ahead and plunk that twanger. Pedal's set to emulate (roughly) an Ampeg flip top.

Oooo! Drummer's happy. With my volume, even.

And in my current situation where I'm working to get my name out there as at least a reasonably capable player, I brave the local open mike. No drummer. No backline. And resolve this with my VT Bass as I just run straight to the board. Select the default setting for "Fat Tube" and the open mike host compliments me on my tone.

Now it's a funny thing, I see threads here saying everything short of "VT Bass killed my cat" right next to high praises. The mids on the VT Bass Deluxe are centered on 500 hz. It's the Character knob that is also a mids knob of sorts and works interactively with the mids knob.

That I like it probably doesn't mean much because it's the only pedal I ever used apart from an MXR overdrive from back when there were still dinosaurs on the gas station signs.

Peace, love and karmic negligence,

- M

You really don't need to add an HPF to a VT as it's got its own built in to mimic the low end response of an 810e or B-15 cab.

We were booked to play Saturday evening at an outdoor venue. Weather didn't cooperate though and we got rained out. :(

GRRRR...GRRR! WOOF! WOOF, WOOF! Crooked venues! Dang weather! Grrrrr . . .

Now there is a reason my old band never let me have a mike. Which is kinda strange, in consideration, as the last time I plunked that twanger with no expectation of even passively unexpressed adulation, SumGai button-holes me as I step off the stage: you should sing.

I believe if I had a mike stand in my radius it should be topped with a PBJ Ear Box because IEMs just ain't gonna happen (famous last words). But not a mike. And owing to the fact my tone memory is probably as accurate as my color memory, the definitive VT-Bass thread is :: Wonder Woman lasso ::

I still dig my big Rumble rig......but Ive been taking my new GK MB112-ii to rehearsals and small Coffee Shop, Winery type of gigs and really enjoying it. I love walking in with a bass in one hand, amp in the other and cable bag over the shoulder...loading in/out has never been easier:). I have yet to have the volume much past the 9-10:00 position, which is about a quarter of the way up.
