I should've explained but I didn't want him to think I was a stalker or something. On TB, he wrote in a thread about picking this up and thought it was I believe over 20 years old. He could tell us better than me. Nah, look at the controls...it's old school. And what combo can you remember three years ago that weighed similar to one of my fifth-grade boys who love snack food?

Scoring a Mesa and Trace-Elliot in the same night...magical. Glad I decided to check on the board to see how things were.

on an unrelated note, I think you tapped into N420's combo surprise. I'm thinking Max 208. Personally, I'd love to have one just to add another sound to my arsenal, but for the love of four-strings, I just can't look the other way with their power specs. I'm sure they're loud and play decently, but the company is putting one of its customers with their wacky ratings. See what I mean. This is direct from their own spec sheet.

POWER AMPLIFIER: (Rated Power)--Continuous RMS (1% THD, 1KHz sine wave, nominal line)

MAX 100 = 60 W (rms) into 8 ohms
MAX 150 = 120 W (rms) into 4 ohms
MAX 250 = 150 W (rms) into 4 ohms
MAX 300 = 200 W (rms) into 3 ohms
MAX 208 = 120 W (rms) into 4 ohms

So, in other words, the so-called 100-watt 110 combo runs out of gas at around 60 watts. That's with an 8-ohm load, RMS, at 1Khz; your typical power amp specification. Look below that though. You see it's the only amp with that rating. Everything else is 4 ohms (even a 3-ohm rating) and that means its 8-ohm rating would be no more than half of what you see here. Do your own math, but their big combo, the 300, is nowhere near 200 watts into 8 ohms. I'm guessing somewhere around 70-75 watts into 3 ohms. And how much am I spending for 75 watts?

This is why I have fought off the urge to buy Peavey. Now Trace-Elliot, that's legit. Come on, Peavey, get back into the game and start building amps again as you did! Heck, their 100-watt combos in the 80s would slice and dice their latest, power-wise. Now tone is subjective and weight has become a huge issue of late, but honesty in the equipment specs is important to many of us.

Off the soapbox, as I have moaned and groaned about this stuff before. See what ya made me do, GP? Now I'm praying N420 picked himself up another brand of combo! :bawl:

Yeah, it's interesting how some builders rate their offerings at peak power and others at RMS. And how often do any of us actually 'dime' our amps. None of my amps has ever been above 1/2.

The difference may be that the Little Mark heads have no outside cover and thus cannot be used as an outboard head, while I believe the WD-800 can be used sitting on top of a cabinet. Have I lost anyone yet?

Members, remind me what our tried-and-true rules are for this situation. I'd love to add this to our ranks, but do not feel like having to buy yet another flame-retardant suit as I go through the process.

No need to add me to the "club" I don't bother with club #'s on TB. Just like to play and tinker... That said, here's another of my faithful combos I use for smaller gigs for years and absolutely love when I get to play it. Let this one burn your noodle. Just curious if this combo of combos is a combo?

It is my latest project. It has three amps and is only roughed in at this point. I am using the VX50BA for treble and the Pathfinder- MV50CL hybrid, running into the old Peavey Max combo as a bass cabinet, for the bass tone. The MV50AC with be used to run guitar type tones. I am trying to do some Mike Kerr type of stuff for a new project. Should be fun!

Fan noise is a pet peeve of mine. Drives me nuts. There's a few manufacturers that nail it, GenzBenz, Markbass... Nice ramping proportional fans or even temp switched. I'm sure there's more manufacturers that have nailed it but in the past I've always ended up replacing the fan on my combos / amps.

Ah! At last an advantage to having lost some hearing. I can't tell that it's on. Come to think of it, I didn't know they had fans 'til it was mentioned here.

My Peavey Max is the same way. Not loud, just...on. Kinda fades into the background if you don't pay attention to it, and completely inaudible while playing.


I (sometimes) use it as a reminder I've left the amp on....:cautious:
