thats sort of our fault for buying more amp than we really need. Once you start shopping it’s very easy to tell yourself. Well I might need that extra 100 watts someday. No you don’t.

In general, bigger speakers in higher power amps, so, if ya want a 15, yer gonna hafta go with 150+ W. And I'd rather have a bit more than I 'need' than 'not quite enuff'. As long as it doesn't weigh too much-a side effect of getting old and decrepit.

If I can find a downside to a combo today ... without an extension cab, many are too small to sit on as the night wears on

Depends upon if they are "real" watts or "advertised" watts. Unfortunately, there are no standards so, it is a crap shoot. A "L_O_N_G" time ago, RMS watts were halfed to come up with a realistic number.
That's when the Ad Execs decided to double RMS advertised watts
. Consumers can't win unless they use their ears, trust TB and/or buy with a return guarantee, before they blow the speakers.And, as previously indicated, total watts are OK unless they blow the speaker(s)...then it is too late and you are SOOL, IMHO.
There certainly are standards and engineering adheres to the standards. Marketing departments ignore them, though. We engineers are tired of getting cranky (and fired) about it.
I understand what you are saying. The problems are with Marketing departments, Consumer Protection and false advertising laws.
These days, products can be offered with internal protection from external abuse and "black boxes" to prove it. As long as false advertising is allowed to continue, manufacturers will not implement them and rely on their "warranties" to protect themselves. Consumers are left holding the bag...end of rant.

Me too...my first experience was not good. Bought used, had blown speakers, didn't know they were and could be replaced.
I would also like to get my Dynaco tube amp with 2-15" D140F's back but, that is not going to happen anytime soon so, I will deal with what I've got.

My 23" tall Rumble 500 combo has supported my sitting tonnage quite well on many occasions. And provides a very nice massage at higher volumes!! Yes, it's very lightweight, but it is sturdily built.
