Bass Combo Smackdown: Week One
I know I left ya'll high and dry after my typical manifesto concerning these pesky combos I have scattered all over the place. So if you're late to the party, I'm running a competition to weed out the weak and undesirables to 1) strengthen the herd through subtraction and, 2) make room for the birthday-present-to-be, Ampeg RB-115.
This was the week of the largest of the pack, the Stage 800. Admittedly, my day job kept me from really going deep into reviewing, but a busy weekend recording songs more than made up for it. How'd she do? In a word...terrible. Though there are times I've prosed that it doesn't matter the size of the room, it can play anywhere, that unfortunately does not include my music room. It's too dang small for the 210s to stretch their legs, so sitting at 3/4 of 1 on the volume, it anemically went through its paces. I couldn't find a decent tone out of my presets either to save my life while using my Precision. I ended up using the Basic Rumble v3 with a little added compression. Yeah, I could pull that rabbit out of the 100's hat.
it's a beautiful piece of art, no doubt about it, but for what I used it for this weekend I'd have to give it a D. My heart and ears had no fun, but on the stage (pun intended) is where it truly shines. For you owners of Studio 40s...smart. Very smart. Is it going on the chopping block? Probably not. I like the versatility too much, though I am now a firm believer that I'm NOT a modeling kinda player. Just give me a combo that allows me to whip up what i yearn for and I'm happy. Markbass combo, where are you hiding?
Next week: the Ampeg BA-108 v2+ is on the board!

Yes- I use the “vintage” button on my Rumble 40- I don’t care for “contour” button (I’m not much on “Slappa da Bass”...). The “bright” button is great for when I plug any guitars into it.
The vintage button just gets me where I need to be- a bit more old school tone goes with my flatwound strings really well.

I've given that some thought. Most of the places we play are short on space and outlets.(not really designed for live music). I don't wanna get accustomed to one and not have access to enuff places to plug it in on gigs, so, BRIGHT.

‘It’s true, SR. I always hoped somehow we could turn our Schmackeroons into something tradable, life with Green Stamps back in the sixties. Remember those, GOFs? But alas, nothing as of yet.
I wonder if Ampeg would accept a quarter-million Schmackeroons over time? Just a thought.
Well, it looks like you really want that new Ampeg 15" combo, whatever the cost in Schmackaroons.

Nice catch, Swink! I wondered what all the hubbub was about until I began using EQs on my recordings and choose to use HPF. I can also adjust the frequency and amount by sliding the notch point on the frequency scale. If and when playing restarts for me I would definitely consider a pedal version. Tell us how you like it.

Since my HPF is "always on", even my signal to the Ampeg BA108v2+ is high passed. Everything that goes thorough the VT Bass Deluxe is low passed at 5k. "Vintage"
I bought it mainly on the advice of some SWR fans, to protect the drivers of my newest acquisition, But I'll definitely bring you up to date on my findings.

Far be it I write the book on an HPF (I ain't), but having ready *nearly* everything here on TB, and having experimented freely
A minor thing, but notable enough for me, is a little BA108v2+ isn't being called upon to reproduce unusable frequencies. TL;DR the baby Ampeg has more power available to frequencies I do want. Maybe, if I'm on overdrive and driving down a long hill with a high tailwind I can get the little 'Peg to grunt out something like 41 imaginary hz
but it ain't worth it to me
