The Combo Club

Clarification: the spare amp is of a brand that I will no longer purchase any of their equipment, due to my dissatisfaction with their business practices. As long as it still works, I'll keep it. It isn't worth going to the effort of selling.
Mind sharing the brand? Inquiring minds want to know!

I know @GonePlaid doesn't go in for brand bashing but, I think a respectful review of his own experience with his particular example of the make and model would fall completely within the bounds of fair play and the goals of the forum and this thread. Yes, enquiring minds want to know!
Great minds think alike!

Ah! But if @GonePlaid's beef is with the company's business practices, then that might, or might not, be a legitimate part of reviewing the amp. He would have to decide whether to risk it, or not.

The fact that he keeps it for a spare is a point in it's favor.

The amp works fine although I've not been able to get the tone I like out of it. It's a Max110(100w/10"speaker)by Peavey. If you saw the "Undercover Boss" episode, you know why they'll never get another $.01 outta me.:spit:

I was a little afraid you were going to say Peavey! I had just come to terms to buying mine, as just after I bought it I wanted a Traynor instead! I'll stick with it for now, as I don't want to lose any money.

Thank you for telling us! I'll have to check that under cover thing out.
I have other pieces by them, bought well before the Undercover Boss show.(2 PA powered mixers, a keyboard amp, PA speakers). They work, they're built like a tank, the 2 PR12 PA speakers are more than enough for most of our gigs, but they 'ticked'* me off. There may well be other manufacturers that have done similar things but I don't know about them.

The difference between Hartley Peavey and other CEO's is that he said it like it is. The fact that there were layoffs as he moved operations to Asia is no different than Fender or Ampeg. A lot of American manufacturing jobs went overseas.

What bothers me is that Peavey ditched their tone-stack model for a more "modern" tone stack to conform to the times. Bad mistake. Now the Peavey bass tone sound flat and lifeless to my ears. Before it had a nice tubey sound. Also Peavey continues to build their stuff out of particle board and outside of the MiniMax and MiniMega they really haven't embraced the latest trend of smaller/more powerful. Although their cabs have been given a facelift, they still follow last century builds. At least the latest acquisition, Trace Elliot is moving ahead with modern bass amp designs.

Just finished the show, and thought it was pretty sad what happened to those folks. I don't mind that some manufacturing has gone overseas. It creates the opportunity for cheaper gear and a more integrated world. Nonetheless, I'm surprised that Peavey didn't do multi-tier products like other companies - Fender, Hofner, Gibson - so that you can manufacture cheap gear for entry level and then boutique gear for those can and will pay for the better gear. That way you seem to get the best of luck both worlds. You save some manufacturing in North America and get the benefits of overseas manufacturing.

Sad, though, for those people.

Notorious members of the Band On The Run Gang were recently spotted making a getaway. If anyone has any information as to their current whereabouts, please call the authorities immediately!

How did you know I had a twin? Well, ... er, one of us did. You see, one of us ate the other before birth, and it's not clear which of us was actually born. But, that wasn't the end of the devoured! It's complicated. Anyway, so, ... uh, ... we share a body! There, I said it. P doesn't like to admit it, but Mrs. Dog and I keep him suppressed most of the time. I'm afraid he made a brief appearance not too long ago when I was g.a.s.'d about a Rumble Stage 800. Mmmmmm . . . Ru-umb-le . . . NO! Serenity now! . . . Serenity now. . . . Serenity . . .

And Mrs. Dog? Well, my therapist . . . . I mean, I have decided to consult her about any substantial purchases. And if P's fangs and hairy pointy ears aren't showing, then she usually agrees. But if they are, then she pets me, . . . uh, him and sings a soothing lullaby, and I wake up with my head in her lap. Yes, the struggle is real. But we are determined and vigilant.

So you think you can throw a guy's picture on the WWW and magically he'll back down on his 1000-clam (by the way, where did you find my clams?) wager? Well, it worked. I hereby reclaim my bet that you'll own a Fender amp by December. I kinda forgot about the physical issues you're going through, plus there's no way you'll score another new amp in 2018 if Mrs. Dog has final say about it!

So give us the blow-by-blow details of your new Vox combo. It is a cute little bugger, I must admit. I also like Doc's approach with the Vox head. All of a sudden Vox seems to be leading the way. Who'd a thunk it?

I've got to send this page to my buddy in Ohio. He'll get a kick out of it. You're a cagy canine, G-Diggity Dog!

Since I've already turned back the clocks I figured I've earned some playing time. I'm currently working on The Doors' "Riders on the Storm" bass line. And yes, for those of you who've already mastered it, we're very happy for you, but I just started and it's gonna take me a bit to get it up to tempo. Love that line though.

You folks brought up an interesting topic for development: what brand of bass guitar AND what brand of amp would you, if you were forced to admit, name as your go-to, no matter what? The good doctor said Hofner for his instrument, but I'm wondering about the rest of you characters. For me, the bass is an easy choice - Fender, no doubt. I have little to no interest in even playing anything else because my brain and fingers are locked into the Jazz neck. Whew, that was easy. The amp? Uhh...let me get back to ya on that one.

So let's hear from our Combo Club soldiers in the trenches. What say you? Guitar? Amp? Heck, if ys want to throw a pedal in that you'd never leave home without, go right ahead. It's Saturday night, what the heck?

Begin dropping down thoughts as soon as you read this. You can always look up M's Ronco Pocket Amp-o-Matic later.

Cheers!
