The Combo Club

I love the Jazz necks too, but it was the fact that my grandpa, my main male role model growing up, played fiddle that caused me to go with Hofner. In regard to amps I don't have any loyalties, but I would not have bought the Peavey if I had seen it before the purchase. But now I'll build on what I got (maybe).
For me, the bass is the really easy part: my 1967 Thunderbird IV that I've been playing since 1973 20180603153130.jpg For the amp, my current R200c, but I regret parting with my(2)1963 piggyback Bassmans (6g6b circuit), 2x12 cabs 1963-Fender-Bassman-004.jpg Because of my short-ish fingers a 'P' neck is too wide. I can(and did) play a 'J', but I started on a Gibson EB-3 in '67 and got used to Gibby necks and sounds. 51 years later, still Gibby/Epi.the gibsons.jpg Full disclosure, I also have a VM Jag SS and an Ibanez semi-hollow(also SS).Squire and Ibanez.jpg Strangely, I'm unable to play more than one at a time.:smug:

Ibanez lefty 4 string mahogany with Barts. While I love my GK MB500 I would also love the GK MB212 or MB210 combos. I only wish they had gone the way of Markbass and allowed to add a second cab instead of having to use GK powered speakers. Still I would buy a matching powered cab for whichever GK combo I bought.
Ive been gigging with an MB212-ii combo for a couple of years...alone its capable of tremendous volume and honestly unless your on "tour" and/or playing huge stages, a second cab at 1000watts may not really be needed. I initially thought the same, but after barely having to push it more than 25% of its capability i realized it wasn't necessary. Instead, putting it at an angle and/or up off the floor a bit really does the trick.

I like(d) the tiltback feature some amps have. Even thought about putting Fender legs on my R200c, but I just use an amp stand or 'Ampwedge'tm.

My current trifecta of basses are a Fender Precision Bass Special, with Jazz neck & PJ pickups, the Jaguar shown in my avatar, and a Fender Modern Player Starcaster short scale with little bit wider neck than a Jazz and humbucker pickups. All three are strung BEAD and feel like home!

For amps, my Bassman 500 w/115 cab and Rumble 500 combo can handle anything, while my Fender B-DEC 30 can model any bass sound and is easy to carry. But the new 9.9 lb. Vox VX50BA is ultralight with rich tones I'm enjoying more every day. Follow @Killed_by_Death and me step by step with our new Vox VX50BA bass amps here:

New Amp Day - VOX VX50BA

You are very wise, Fearless Leader @iagtrplyr, to retract your wager. Although, I will still accept a Rumble Studio 40 from a "Secret Santa".

:)

My PBJ rig actually needs to be coupled to the floor and a wall or corner for proper bass response at volume. All perfectly okay with me now that there's a lovely Fender Custom Shop tweed to run between my pedal and amp. In turn it means my body doesn't present herself as a mids damper.

Now turned off that television machine in 1996 and while I acknowledge the things exist (and all the stuff that comes with), I'll put it this way instead - what is outside of me remains outside of me and I take full responsibility for what I choose to let in.

And in truth there isn't a big call for people who recite Middle English poetry, so the Peavey it is. This sucker ias loud and it's something affordable and pretty much built to withstand anything. Since it weighs just shy of a battleship, there's a love/hate thing going on here. That's part of the charm?

The sound of Peavey at volume is memorable. So too is loading it in and loading it out, everywhere, to practice and to gig because there isn't a second practice amp to keep at Ron's place. The Peavey occupies a prominent place in my home, much like an altar to worship deep and loud. Pinned to the grille fabric is a large blue button with a white dove and the word Peace! For some reason in this period people give me buttons, and lacking anything else to do with them there is also

a small black and white button declaring membership in Boston's High Society, and a Nobody For President campaign button from Wavy Gravy. We're playing Los Angeles, hey, got a pretty good following with some originals.

It's the Peavey that holds the bottom end and yeah we got really loud but playing with Fritz is teh besto. He's figured out how to play The Black Page on his own, so ....

Never did grow up to own that rack. Though (and as true as the day is long) there is a rib joint that sells tee shirts that read: Big Rack and everybody is supposed to think this is clever the same way as people wearing comedy shirts from seafood restaurants that specialize in blue crabs.

Shoot, conference call, forgot about the time dang bye

Wise? Ya basically showed me the exit door! Here I was gonna offer to buy a Studio 40 if you were going to replace the Vox with one. That way we could do in-depth comparisons, but I respect your sincere interest in your latest purchase. I will be sure to talk to Mrs. Claus about Secret Santa dropping off one of the new Rumbles, but I wouldn't hold my breath too long if I were you.

Already stating my Jazz (or any other down the road) is a permanent fixture, my attention turns to the bass amp. I liked Ghost's "they 're a lot like buses..." line a page back. Though they are by far my favorite purchase, I have yet to find THE one that I'll never part with. It probably doesn't exist because what I hear changes daily. I'm the guy who needs 3-4 different variations to keep it fresh. I tried that with wives but miserably failed.

I'd say my Ampeg rig is as nice as I've owned though I know it has its shortcomings like all amps. It's the closest thing, I think, to the tone I like to play out with. Everything else I either own or owned were fine in certain situations, but haven't been able to stand the test of time with me. I envy Doc who's hanging in with the Peavey; trying to make it work for him. I'd have dumped it a long time ago even at a loss. To continue to occupy space in the Fearless Leader stable, you better be able to pull your own weight. Who knows? Maybe I'll have to try out one of those Vox thingys. If I remember, I was the one who first asked about them long before they became the hot item in the CC. Honestly, I just don't trust Vox due to previous purchases, but I am pulling for KbD, Doggie, and Doc to enjoy their amps forever and a day.

Talk to ya'll later in the week!

What is that wedge looking thing in the picture? That might be exactly what I need for my Rumble 200c. I did a quick Amazon search (searched for 'Amplifier Wedge') and found this: https://www.amazon.com/Ampwedge-Pol...id=1541618148&sr=8-4&keywords=amplifier+wedge

But $79 seems a bit steep.
Yeah, that's it. I don't remember paying that much, but I've had it for awhile. The back of yer amp is still in contact w/ the floor so it might not be the answer for you. Most of our gigs are not on a wood stage but on cement or tile floors. The "RS4000 Amp Stand" on the right has little rubber 'feets' that give some isolation from the floor. I've also been known to use a 'Snap-On'tm kneeling pad with the Ampwedge to isolate the cab from a wooden stage. I also have a MudStand(I forget the price)-the smaller one. This is it w/ My R200c 0425180851-00.jpg 0425180851-01.jpg

Two chrome columns on a vintage Peavey is only now an attention-getter, what's with that? Totally never, ever expected anyone to say, hey that's a cool Peavey. Not in this universe. And now that thing is cool. Huh.
35 y/o keyboard amp w/ a 15" speaker, 3 separate channels. I used to play bass in one channel, electric keyboard w/ bass section in another(not together!). Weighs slightly less than the van I move my gear with. Brushed aluminum side panels on mine.

See? That's hip. Now. Then it was something that got the job done.
