The Combo Club

Soul Reflection, don’t bother gassing up the mobile home. RodRy, you don’t need to make your big batch of traveling chili, GP just assassinated Operation Kasino 2021.

GP, we know it’s a ridiculous idea we had, but our love and respect for you drew us together. Your club mates would love to see your Kasino finally paired up with a matching ext cab.

Sure, it’d be heavier than a circus elephant and stretch SR’s mobile home to bizarre dimensions, but dammit, we’d do it and ya wanna know why? Because we wanted a Bro Vacation to do something which reminds us that we’re the only animal on this planet who can do something this crazy and get away with it!

That’s okay though, I’ll blow up my backyard shed this coming week to replace the rush of crashing with RR in the top bunk.

And never worry about cost, the club will pick up the tab if you ever want a cab. G’Dog just about has his secret ray gun ready to go to market and he’s projecting billions of schmackeroons will be heading into the club’s treasury!

All you’ll ever need to worry about is where you’re gonna take us for some tasty shrimp...

After cramming retirement and a move to a new state into the last few weeks, I finally get a chance to plug in and do a little "noodling". Just out of the pic to my left is my little Carvin Pro Bass 100...there, now it's combo related...

Biggie! I’ve missed ya, Man. To me, that pic looks like a guy whose face shows no signs of stress and is happy doing what he loves to do. Heck, you ARE retired!

Glad your trip and move in went well. Don’t forget that you can stay up late and sleep in a bit now and forever. Don’t be a stranger! :hyper:

I’m always up for a road trip!
A girl and I once hitchhiked down to the Jersey Shore from the Mainline ‘burbs west of Philly. Interesting way to travel- that was summer 1983…we hitchhiked back as well.

The more I play with the Rocket 115, the better it sounds… flat EQ, no SGT. Ultra-High on. Just the Jazz bass Neck pickup at 8-9, no bridge, tone at about 3. Dug in at bridge with fingers- great, solid, thick tone with enough mids to snarl a little bit- Nice!

Same EQ played fingerstyle just above the neck pickup. Solid, thump with a bit of growl when played firmly. About as close to a P sound that a J can get on its own.

I’m on the hunt for the mythical new covers- they look sweet; they include a “ditty” pocket on back for a few cords and a DI box, maybe.

Adorama Music and Kraft are taking preorders. Anyone use them? - Thanks!

Good Monday morning, Tele! This was a fun read. You had hiking adventure, a solid update on your RB-115, and gave everyone a sneak peek at the new covers some of us will own soon. Nice!

We’re like cosmic twins or something with our settings; exactly the same. Unlike some players in the Rocket Bass who're turning their bass control down a bit, I haven’t felt the need, but I do like adding the Ultra Hi to add clarity to my naturally dark violin bass.

The mids, always a big part of the Ampeg tone recipe, is what I notice most, especially after owning the Rumble 100 for a few years. The difference is real and comes through, at least for me.

Between that, it’s weight, looks, and features, it and my Markbass combo are my home go-to combos. And the RBs are more than giggable under reasonable conditions.

As for the covers, yes, I’m definitely getting one but have decided to use Amazon as soon as they come in, supposedly later this month. For the $50 price, it’s a must-buy item. I like the pocket too.

Good to hear from ya, Tele. Enjoy your Rocket Bass as much as I am mine!

Unbelievable even to me — turned the bass (almost) all the way up, the treble all the way down (and left the mids alone) for the very first time with the PJB BG-400 combo. Yeah, really, it never occurred to me to turn up the bass because there's plenty bass set flat. But practicing the reggae ... slap on the NordyMute and let 'er go. Lord have mercy. :smug:

Independent of this thread, last night Karen Dalton's voice came to me unbidden. Here's her wonderful version of The Band's In a Station (Obligatory bass content - Harvey Brooks produceed both of her records.):

A great tune, Haroldo. Very much a unique voice that lent well to the song itself. Also, a super sweet bassline that gives credence to why so many of us were influenced by that era's musicianship and sound. Ah, I'm young again!

With all this talk about covers, I just realized I didn't have one for my Rumble 115 cab. Ordered one from MF at $24.99. Of course it isn't padded or have a handy pouch like you Rocket 'peggers but at least it will keep the dust off...I hope ;).

Have one for my R115 cab, you'll love it. Personally, I find those Fender covers to be one of the best deals they offer. It's not at a Tuki-cover level, but it's not as expensive either and does keep the dust bunnies away. Smart move, SR, do you have one for your S40?

Not yet, but I am looking and using a towel in the interim...

I do that too! Actually, I'm so bad, I kept my R100 cover after selling the combo (he didn't deserve it for the price I sold it) and am using it for my Markbass. It's not a perfect fit, but if it's raining out the combo will stay dry. I say, "Waste not, want not!"
