The CORT Club (Part 2)

I hope this isn't against the rules. I picked up a Cort B4 at the local pawn shop. Loved the tone but unfortunately I am a medium scale player. Wasn't going to get it the tone drew me back. I contacted a local luthier and had him build me a medium scale neck. Now I call it a Cort B4M and it's perfect.

I have a Sire V7 5 string. I have since bought a Cort B5+ and an A5 Custom SP. My V7 is up for sale. I prefer the narrow neck of the B5 and love the tone on the A5. Quality-wise.. Cort eats Sire for breakfast!

Well, I was very reluctant about this purchase, it was basically my dad putting his foot down and over me but god did he get it right.

I'm now an owner of a GB PJ and it sounds stellar. I'd say on par with my Yamaha BB425.

Another fresh Cort owner here, announcing the upcoming pics.

It's an Action PJ OPW and it ticks all my checkboxes except for some (serious?-will present in the pictures) body finish gripes.

It's 2.95 kg, it's 109 cm long (Harley Benton PB-shorty iz 107cm?), neck is thin (38 mm at the nut) and matte but there is no friction, it's fast and almost plays by itself, sounds zingy with some bottom end heard even without amplification. It WAS setup at the factory (says it was on a sticker) because intonation IS spot on, action is good but could be a bit lower, however D and G string buzz up to the 5th fret or so, but the neck is straight as a ruler. Perhaps I should leave it a few days to see if string tension will bend the neck a bit and then try some truss rod adjustment.

Sadly, at this price range it's probably best to avoid open pore finish since the wood used is likely the worst parts (leftovers). It looks like it was already scraped against something in places, but luckily it's mostly in the back and at the sides. Generally, from afar the finish looks a bit like plastic imitation of wood and that's really not what I expected. The worst offense is the ragged/choppy edges of electronics compartment where wood gave up when met with the CNC machinery. Wander if I should consider returning it for this, it was discounted to $170 equvalent but wasn't listed as B-stock or decoration. Still I probably won't get another one at this price any time soon (I'm not in the US) .

The neck seems blemish-free, fretboard is jotoba and it looks a bit cheap, but paired with the body, it's like brown shade combination from the seventies Shaft would wear - it's kind of matching.

Sorry for the knit-picky, tight ass air of the post but it's everything I could not find info about so hope it helps someone. I like the compact critter but hoped for a little more refinement.

Anyone know what strings could be on it? They are roundwounds with black silk top and bottom.

The only strings I know of that come w Corts are Cleartones, which are quite nice and would be for that bass.

Thanks. Since Cleartone seem to have a limited offer of bass strings, and knowing it's a medium set (45-105), I will assume it's their standard line (not heavy bass) that cost $37 per set. Hope they last as long as they claim

Comparison to my 1988 yugoslav-made monster (left in picture-7,5 cm longer, 1kg+ heavier with all-Schaller hardware):


I played it on my Hartke HD25 and pickups seem rather hot when on full, overdriving the amp a bit, especially when played through headphones . It's tone is properly rocking(think J.J.Burnell meet Stuart Morrow), take the pups down a bit and it's behaving, half a turn gradually turns down the volume till half way, then nothing happens till just before full off (like a notch free on/off) - much like others have described the controls.
Bottom end is not prominent but it could be due to the small practice amp, didn't have time to DI it.

Just got an A5 Plus bass and swapped out the stock pickups that were not branded to Bartolini MK1 pickups and have noticed a dramatic decrease in output. Has anyone else experienced this? The stock pickups do not appear to have been active and the preamp is the Markbass 3 band.

I've played a Sandberg Ken Taylor years ago, and, IMMO, this Arona is pretty closest to its Sandberg big brothers.

I ignore why Cort discontinued this basses in 2015.
