Removed the stock PUPs/Pre. Didn’t like the sound at all. Especially the bridge pickup solo’d. Installed LeCompte Triple Threat single coils and a John East UNI 3 band pre w/ passive tone, Sadowsky style knobs. Got em used from the classifieds, and reverb.

Wow. Incredible sound. Just Incredible. Anyone thats familiar with the East pre’s knows how dramatic a change they can make. And the Triple Threats are noiseless, and very punchy.

Will be gigging this bass soon to confirm usability.

The bridge is a bit of a nightmare. Stringing thru the saddles requires removal of some of the hold down screws, as the screw heads obstruct the string ball ends from releasing/ or being flush during install. Idiotic. The bridge basically demands you string thru the body…which then requires Extra Long strings as the outer string wrap of the string doesn’t reach the nut. I put on my standard length elixirs and the outer wrap wouldn’t reach the nut when strung through the bridge. Ridiculous. So this bass requires Extra longs. I just put the stock D’Addarios back on. As stated, this is the polar opposite of a quick release bridge.

I swapped the Bart MkI’s back in for 1 show. Bass became unusable. Lost all note differentiation on the B string. Swapped the Triple Threats right back in. Gigged it last night. Killer.

The flat finger board is really conducive to ridiculously low action. It’s such a fast playing bass. I can do stuff on it I can’t do on other basses.

Honestly, I wish they made it in a 4 string. I really would love one of these below 8lbs.

Even stock, its a really pretty instrument. I’m thinkin bout pullin the chrome paper off. Go back to this…..

I have a few other basses with Bartolini MK1 pickups (2 with Bart preamps and 2 with Markbass preamps), but this one seems to be more bland than the others. I brought it to jazz band rehearsal last night and I couldn't dial in a sound to cut through like I wanted. It was too generic and seemed to lack character in the mids even with the mids almost maxed out.

It is currently strung with the original (I believe D'Addario) strings. I'm wondering if a new set would give this bass more character. Lately I've really liked light gauge GHS Boomers on my basses. Does anyone have a suggestions on strings? Has anyone else experienced this "generic" sound?

New strings (especially a different brand or gauge) can make a huge difference on any bass!

Hi Cort Club,

I am shopping for a 5-string bass with 34 inch scale or shorter, 7-8 pounds in weight, no neck dive, relatively narrow string spacing, preferably swamp ash rather than poplar, and less than $600 used. It seems to me that a used Cort Artisan B5 would be a serious contender. What are your thoughts? Any other Corts you would suggest?

I am the proud owner of 3 Cort Basses. C4, C5 & C6 they are very good basses, Great to play with great woods, necks and features...I love the Mark Bass eq. Seem like incredible value to me. I've owned many brands over the years.
Regarding logo's, I've never bothered about names, I just buy what I like. I know a few Jazz players (I mean Jazz as in the music) who love Corts.

Don't think I've ever posted my Cort on here. It is a GB74 I picked it up from a pawn shop with fried electronics. I bought it because I liked the grain and because the price was low enough that it was worth it for the ultralight tuners. I pulled out the active electronics and it made a nice passive bass. I then picked up a glockenklang preamp and put that it, but the output with that was almost non-existent.

At the moment it is with a friend (a guitarist who asked if he could borrow a bass). If he manages to work out why it has low output then he gets a bass to use, if not; I've managed to get a Cort preamp from a DLX and he can try putting that into it.

The photo is of it when it was a passive bass, plus I had it strung up as BEAD.

I have the same model and my bass sounds fine with the original
Bartolini electronics. B string sounds fine even with Cobalt flats on the bass.

What strings are you using?

Elixir. It’s funny, in the vid demo’s the OEM electrics sound fine. But in my studio, they were def not impressing. YMMV. The John East/LeCompte upgrades made it a monster sound wise. My benchmark is the Sadowsky pre which records extremely well, and sound fantastic in my In-Ears on stage, The Stock Bart stuff was noticeably more timid.
