The deep (analog) modulation thread.

There are (analog) pedals that throb, modulate, vibe and do things that are unique. The phase 90 is such a device. The Mutron Bi phase. The tycobrahe parapedal, Vox wah, Roland space echo.

Are there any other effects out there that 'do that thing' ?

All these effects are filters. So they DO something to the sound. So if they are set to allmost do nothing. They can give the bass the girth and warmth we can associate with an allmost clean tube amplifier giving you juuuuuusssst enough.... to be thick and ballsey.

And for all bass players out there. Listen to the bassplayer from the Stray Cats. He will pop and tick on his contra bass. And get all funky with a contra bass. You want to get close to that sound. All these pedals can be used to ever so slightly give you more of that on a clean amp and a bass guitar.

I second the Pigtronix Envelope Phaser. The Subdecay Quasar DLX had also got a nice pulsing vibe to it.
I use a locally made take on the EqD Depths, the Krozz Krakenheart. Very nice Uni-vibe sounds, got low end for days.
Would the Boss Ph-1R qualify? It's my favourite phaser, but I think the pass-filtering is more prominent than the throbbing, pulsing, etc.

A lot of Chase Bliss pedals "throb, modulate, vibe and do things that are unique" while still having an analog signal path:
  • Gravitas (tremlo)
  • Spectre (flanger)
  • Thermae (delay)
  • Tonal Recall (delay)
  • Warped Vinyl (chorus)
  • Wombtone (phaser)
The Fuzzrocious Electric Ocean is a delightfully weird analog modulation pedal as well (fuzz +phaser).

I must say, though, the scope of this thread needs to be more precisely defined. For example, the MXR Phaser 90 is classic but hardly unique. So is this thread about classic modulation? Unique modulation? Good-sounding modulation? Right now this thread is at risk of turning into a catch-all list of analog modulation pedals. That's a topic that's too broad to lead to the sort of targeted discussion which will sustain itself, and that's a real shame because I think there is potential here.
