The direction music is headed?

I saw the GMA interview with the girl. Just a young girl that want's to sing. Understands her own talent level also. "I don't think I'm the worst singer, but I don't think I'm the best singer".

She's taken a lot of crap from people who never get off the couch and do anything. I imagine most of the people on this board couldn't produce much better. If only she had droned on the same note in drop H tuning at max volume in a hockey mask.

Personally, I can't see how ANYONE can giver her crap at all. It's not her fault and it is ashame she is taking any heat... Nor do I think the peeps who wrote or produced the songs should be taking a hit for the song. They're just doing what they do. I'm still leaning toword genius by the way.

What does suprise me though is the peeps listening to it and buying it. Seems "Friday" is they type of music some people/ tweens want to hear. Are there any stringed instruments in that song?

Ouch! And the majority of the board goes DOWN :D

And hence I weep for the species.

That's almost certainly true. That's why I said that people on the board "can either whine about how better things used to be, or, if they're so knowledgeable, they can step up, go out and create some music that proves just how bad they perceive modern music to be."

I just know that some of the people here are gonna point to some crazy, super technical 32nd note banality in a blizzarding musical array of unpleasant eardrum assaults, or some trite music that sounds vaguely like every rock song produced by bad garage bands for the last 40 years. I'm not saying I'm any better - lord knows I'm not living off my music. But I'm also not attacking a 14-year old girl's music, who by cursory accounts, seems like a sweet enough kid.

Oh my god, whenever she says "friday" its like nails on a chalk board! AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!

I know people always say that the music industry's always been crap, but come on, look a Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, I may not be a fan of some of these bands, but I think they have all been considered fairly mainstream, but they built their careers on being different. I dare anyone to name a band that came out in the past 10 years that has come close to touching any one of these bands. Double dog dare ya.

Wilco

Kings of Leon

Guster

Ben Harper

There is a ton of great music out there.

I feel that it's the song itself that is the problem, not so much the girl. She is only a 13 year old girl and can't be expected to know any better. When she went to the studio, she had a choice of two songs they offered her. This is my understanding of what happened. The reality of the matter is that she could have probably written a better song herself. Almost anyone could have. Having said all that, I can't really say that I approve of the girl herself being ridiculed.

The Top 20 of one year doesn't reflect the totality of what one would hear on a mainstream station during the course of a year. I clearly stated that there was plenty of "disposable pop fluff" in the '70s. I'll still put what was played on free mainstream radio overall throughout the '70s against the same thing over the past decade any day. Remember, I'm talking about free mainstream radio, not specialized Sirius satellite radio or stuff you have to look for on the Internet.

But why the arbitrary measuring stick?

But why the arbitrary measuring stick?
Because many people believe that pop music has always sucked. Sometimes they say it all sucked, or maybe they're generous and say 90% was bad. I grew up listening to '70s AM Top 40 radio, and while there was pop fluff and one-hit wonders (as I have stated before), it certainly did not suck overall. I've also made the point that there's no way of knowing if one musical era is better than another overall, because you can't possibly listen to all of it. I simply believe that the music that was played on pop stations back in the day was better than what's on pop stations now, so I'm sticking to the "measuring stick" that's easily available. And you didn't have to go looking for great music. IMO, YMMV, it's all subjective, etc. Besides, I love a good, clean debate!

And dont forget the mandatory metal bashin during any musical discussion, thanks for makin the quota buddy.
Please don't be a presumptuous. Wait, too late.

I love metal but can easily point out it's bleeding to death profusely in the last decade, and feel it's sad your offended enough I have to point this out.

Trying to find non-screaming, non-auto-tuned, clean metal lyricists in metal today is like finding, well you know how the cliche' goes.

Those bands with good music have Cookie Monster singing. Those with clean lyrics are auto-tuning/ mixing screaming with "clean".

Hahaha, okay captain expert :smug:

I have listened to quite a bit.

Are you just not aware?

Here's a lacksdaisical listing effort of widely known, national acts doing as such:

Attack Attack
Abandon All Ships (auto tune is real strong)
Behemoth
Bullet for my Valentine
Children of Bodom
Cradle of Filth
Dillinger Escape Plan
Soilwork
The Black Dahlia Murder
Whitechapel

The point I'm making is, any band that wants to be 'metal', and the fans dictate, think only Cookie Monster is allowed to sing, or it's not 'metal'. Hell why do you think Myke Terry was kicked out of Bury Your Dead? Clean singing. Or why the constant statements Mudvayne or All That Remains sold out? Less growling.

Period.

And those that have mixed in clean vocals are auto-tuning. Can you believe it? Metal and auto-tuning in the same sentence!?!? Gee golly wiz!

And I will enjoy the response trying to attack this. I believe the first attempt will be along the lines of "wrong sub-genre(s)". They are all categorically 'metal'.

Metal is not above this "integrity in music" discussion, and I had to point out the ridiculous statement that metal has gotten better.

The music is doing better than ever imo. Not only do we have access to centuries of great music already made, we get new music everyday. Sure, 90% of it is bad, but that's the nature of experimentation... Do you think only good music was made 200 years ago? Or 50 years ago? I'm pretty sure 90% of it has ALWAYS been bad...

Now, sometimes good and bad is a matter of taste or mood and sometimes it is just bad. Not necessarily unpopular, but judging ANYTHING by the number of hits a youtube video has is doomed to distort the picture (no. of hits tells just that: the number of hits).

You never know, maybe the 90% of bad music is what inspires the 10% to go above and beyond...
