The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

has anyone been into one of these amps enough to know if the tube sockets are soldered directly to the circuit board or are chassis mounted, likewise with the pots and jacks ? , thanks
As soon as the Berg 115 becomes available downunder it will become my go to cab for my 100T for sure. The SB300 sounds great with the Berg 215, but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised at a big gig recently where I used the Fender neo 610 with the SB300 - it really punched with huge lows and defined mids. I have been favouring the Berg 215 over the neo 610 a bit basically from habit, but the neo 610 has really opened up with a good thrashing (plus it does have the bling factor 
).
Chrisan, I haven't had a look but the cynic in me would be very surprised if the tube sockets are chassis mounted. On the positive side, most of the tube heads I have ever owned have been chassis mounted and it has never been a problem.

Isn't it a popular idea that chassis mounting is a better built amp as this keeps the heat away from the circuit board and reduces stress on the board when changing tubes, also with the jacks ie; plugging in and unplugging cables flexes the jack sockets.
Is this whats meant by ptb? Does that stand for point to board wiring?

For those that have stated that you can get the SVT sound out of it, what settings were you using?

I found that - vintage channel- mids up around 8, treble- 6, bass- 3, gain - about 5-6. - got me pretty damn close to my friend's SVT-VR
Maybe it's the 6550's, I dunno, but as soon as I plugged it in to my sealed 1x15 cab, it just HAD "that" sound/tone-whatever. Absolutely magic this amp is.
Not only have u THAT tone-described above, but then you've got another tone "universe" with the 'modern' (overdrive) channel-to be either a clean, similar option or blended with some (or lots) overdrive. Brilliant!
All the tone with a few less pre tubes & 15 or so less lbs weight:thumbup:

NAD! No surprises, man, this head is amazing. The vintage channel sounds so ballsy and throaty. I'm still a little bamboozled by the overdrive channel and find myself just trying to dial in the same sound as the vintage channel but with a hint of grit.

I'm having a blast with the OD channel playin old Band of Gypsys,Grand Funk & Mountain bass lines. But it's so easy and great for adding just a bit of grit when needed too.

On a slightly different angle:-
I played a wedding gig last nite- venue- winery that we've played many times before, our own FOH PA -old JBL 1x15 SR series & Dynacord powered desk with just vocals & a touch of drums- o'head & kick - in PA.
I took the Super Bassman & one (3015 modded) PF115HE (1x15") cab. I'd usually take both cabs (both 3015 modded PF115HE's) for a 2 x 115 stack, but these Emi neo 15" drivers are just so cool, one handles this easily.
So- 62 AVRI Pass w, Labella tapes & A-C EUT5 ('70's jazz 5'er) with SIT rounds- into :-
Fender Super Bassman 300 > 1x PF115HE.
Set the vintage channel - bass- 3, mid - 8, treble- 6 gain 6.
"Modern"(overdrive) channel - pretty much set to match the vintage channel, but with mid freq about 4, mid level 6 - for a tiny bit of aggressiveness, & drive on 4 blended between 1 & 8 - 1 when I wanted an in ur face punch & 8 when I wanted a distorted grime, but still with plenty of bottom end. songs such as - Standing on Shaky Ground & I wanna Take You Higher & similar.
Using the vintage channel 80% of the time, it has such authority / beefiness to each note. I'm finding that like NEVER before, I'm able to play ( eg. especially ballads ) up in a higher register & ain't losing any punch / power. This's WITHOUT nessesarily being loud. This was a wedding remember
I find it really frees up my playing- one-to enable me to easily & quickly switch between an amazing clean tone to a monstrous overdrive .... & two, having that authority to play solidly up on the G & D strings without spring that it ain't full / powerful & still "driving the band" out front. I've got corporate function, with our 5 piece jazz/ blues band, Tues nite & I know I'd sound great with the Aggy TH500 & PF115HE, but I'll be taking the SB300 for sure.
As the guitarist in this band (a fellow "purveyor of fine gear" ) said- "hey, if we've gone out of our way to source & buy nice gear, we don't wanna be leaving it at home just because this other gear's lighter, easier to carry /quicker to set up etc. We bought it to USE! "

This afternoon was my first band rehearsal with the SB300. Far out, the amp was outstanding, perfect with my P bass. To begin with I thought I'd predominantly use the vintage channel as till now'd had better luck finding a good tone on the vintage side. But I found a really sweet, punchy overdriven tone in the overdrive channel that sat beautifully in the mix, and really suited the sound of our band. I found myself rockin the overdrive channel and lovin it - What an amp! Couldn't be happier! The band mates were impressed too.
Currently my new SB300 is paired with an NV610 and it is huge sounding. I could not be happier with the tone and weight of the sound.
As a smaller option I'm considering getting a single NV115.
Tom B, when you get a chance please can you write a quick review of the SB300 with a single NV115?

It'll be superb with the NV115.
Just been reading how the NV115 sounds so like the NV215, & it sounds great with that.......
It sounds amazing thru my sealed 115's too.

We did play the SB300 through one NV115 when Steve stopped by with his cabs, and it plays nicely, and sounds fantastic.
this was interesting , towards the end , around the 23m mark, the tech talks about mike having a fair bit to do with the design of the sb300
