The game has been changed.

Hooray for five minutes of finger banging an iPad.

I'm not at all turned off by new technology but I don't see a great deal of entertainment value in this particular video. Of course it doesn't help that the kid stood around for a minute slightly bobbing his head to some canned beats.

PS. BroBro Meyer and Swerve is my jawn shun (to quote jrmy).

Here is the ONLY way a Kitara is going to look cool on a stage...

Nah, Matt Bellamy looks cool using a similar kind of gadget. They can style the Kitara for stage use and I'm sure you can customize the touchpad display for additional visual effect.

The Kitara is not a replacement for guitar or bass, but it is an interesting new tool (or an evolution of previous tools if you prefer) for music. At the very least, a Kitarist (??) could be more interesting to watch at a show than a dude standing behind a keyboard and a MacBook.

Man, there's a whole lot of fogey-ism going on in this thread. This is just a synthesizer, but the control mechanism has been modified to make it resemble fretting and playing a guitar. Do you guys slag on everyone using a synthesizer as having no musical talent? Do you have to play crappy dad-rock to have talent? Now, if you have opinions as to whether this is a good or bad synthesizer, by all means, give your opinion. But I'm not hearing any informed opinions or criticisms with any real (*#%@# value. All I hear coming from people here is, "Hey you kids, get off my lawn!!"

Oh Ben,...

You have to admit,...the Vid in the OP is rather boring.

In the other vids I can see some merit in the expressiveness of the thing,....but I don't see it as a replacement for anything,....analog or digital synths,....stringed instruments,....through pedals,...and amps,...other midi controllers,....etc etc.

Someone will come along and take a piece of equipment like that to new heights of virtuosity,...but I don't see it changing anything.

I'm all for the advancement of musical instrument technologies (while not ignoring the merits of old tech) and the talented use of technology.

It's at this junction that I'd like to point out the fact of the matter is there are plenty of people out there with thousands of dollars worth of analog gear that can't carry a tune in a paper bag.

Yeah, the kid in that first vid is a chode. I don't care, that's not the point. The point is, this is just a new control mechanism for a synthesizer, and people here are reacting like it's a fake instrument, and it takes no talent to use one to create music. I'm saying that's BS, unless you think the same way about someone using any other synthesizer.

As for what this thing does that other synths don't ... well, it's a synthesizer that you control with a touch pad and keys laid out like a guitar fretboard. That's new enough that I'd at least be interested in trying it out myself to see how instinctive it is. Not interested enough to buy it, but if I saw one somewhere, I'd take it for a ride.

I'm not saying this is "the future of music" like the OP did. But some of the posts that the dad-rock fogey Luddites were spewing here stuck in my craw.

to clarify,...I was just defending my admittedly ambiguous position. That kid just seems to have more money than talent,...but at least he's trying.

To be fair; new tech like this is always going to draw knee jerk naysaying from the "purists". I'm sure there was a similar reaction when Leo introduced a new fangled device called the Precision Bass.

I know I could show this to the nerd drummer of Mecha Shiva and he would think it's cool.

I'm with bigchiefbc, this is a novel controller hooked up to Ableton. Having just got that software, I could see the value in having a more familiar shape for an instrument -- as opposed to a mouse and keys, a DJ kit, a keyboard or a grid of buttons.

I think the presence of haters here have indicated it might be a good concept. Don't know, and it'll take a really good vid to get me GASsing for one, but I'd certainly try it if I came across one.

I don't really understand this logic. The presence of "haters" makes something cool?

If this thing was like a hundred bucks I'd probably get one to play around with. But according to the website it runs several thousand bucks. A bit much for something that looks like a fancy videogame off the shelf at WalMart, IMO.

Maybe if I were a little more hip and a little less grandpa I'd sell my car and take out a loan for this novelty.

I would totally rock one of those. It wouldn't replace my basses but I'd have a hella good time playing new sounds with that bad boy. And I don't think I'd take it on a blues gig. But it would be cool with the Blue Man Group.

I am deeply saddened, yet extremely excited. My cousin tonight has shown me the future.

Ladies and gentlemen....

The Misa Kitara...

Trick Smil3y - Kickass! (live dnb) - YouTube

So much for all the effects pedals we've been trying to buy in the attempt of recreating these sounds.

There are so many other videos you can watch to really get a grasp of what this amazing thing can do.

This is not new newz... But personally I think the thing is kind'a cool... don't get me wrong I see flaws but I hope they get a kloo and stuff and do a bass version... and lets hope if so they do not **** it up like Ztar has...

Also yeah I agree with BCBC!

Haters = a good thing for the kitara because it shows people have an emotional reaction to it. That in itself is good. But the more people yelling about it, the more people will find out about it or start GASsing for it and the more instruments the company will sell. If the community then increases, you have a greater likelihood of getting a couple virtuosos on the instrument and thus getting it taken more seriously, selling more units, etc.

Anyway, it's a new instrument and that's cool. I wouldn't immediately poo-poo a machine that tries to make the current musical zeitgeist more accessible to bassists and guitarists.
