The GHS Thread

Whoa, GHS is in Battle Creek? I was just in Kalamazoo two weeks ago. I would have made sure to come to Battle Creek to come check the factory out (if yall take visitors.) I have a location in BC anyway so maybe I can force another trip soon. Hmmmmmmmmm

We DO take visitors! I'm fairly new to the office (and wouldn't have been here two weeks ago) so I don't have the tour jargon memorized yet, but if you're back in town when the Artist Rep is, we can give you a tour, no problem. It'll be your own private episode of "How It's Made."

Very cool! I always love when companies get involved in the TB Community!

When it comes down to it, you all are the reason we make strings. Period.

Really dig the Progressives (only strings that I put on my 5 strings anymore), Boomers (a great string in general), and Pressure Wounds (my choice for my fretless right now!).

I have sent along the concerns about the E string in the regular packaging, and while I can't guarantee anything, I can at least let comments and concerns be heard.

I don't like flats but I do like both pressure / half wound type strings and rounds. Although I'm a roundwound fan I do like mixing it up!

I'm the same way. However, I've got a number of gigs requiring an older sound and as such, am trying to get familiar with our flats here. It's a learning process. :)

Jargon or not, I'd love to wander around there. I'm not sure when the next time I have reason to hit either of the mills in Kalamazoo or Battle Creek, but between those strings and my custom being built that close together....I have to stop by!

Let me start off by saying that it is a good time to be a bass player! I have used several different brands over the years and lately have been going back and forth between DR and D'Addario. I loved the tone of Sunbeams but the tension was a bit too loose for me in the long run. D'Addarios felt great tension wise and I loved their customer service but something was missing tonally for me.

I talked with Jason at http://www.bassstringsonline.com and he recommended that I try GHS Boomers. I was resistant to this. Boomers? No, they die fast and I continued trying other sets. After continuously not finding what I was wanting I finally tried a set of the Boomers and loved them instantly. They were put on about a month ago and are still going strong. I've been trying other strings from GHS as well and I have to say that I am a fan of their product as well as their customer service.

My thoughts on...

Boomers:
A great nickel plated round wound. Full body tone with a very smooth feel. I can get just about any tone I'm wanting from these.

Pressure Wounds:
Another great string. These are an Alloy52 blend. Really good output and very smooth. A bit stiffer than typical rounds. They sound great on fretted but really great on my fretless. They are very mid forward but still have a little brightness to them.

Progressives:
These are my hands down favorite string. Especially for a 5 string bass! Circle K has a great B string and in my experience the Progressives B rivals if not beats it. Amazing feel and tone. Also made of Alloy52 from what I understand. Again, very smooth and killer tone.

Haven't tried anything else yet, but so far I love what I've tried!

+1

I loves me some GHS!

Brite Flats are my favorite string for my P-bass!

I've found that when I get a fresh pack, wiping the individual strings down with a little WD-40 removes any grinding residue, and helps to lube them up a little bit. They smooth out after a gig or two.

I've had this set on my P for going on 2 years now. I love em!

BTW, GHS Official...... You're not Chris are you?

***EDIT***

I just caught that you're new there.

Please do!

And what are you having built?

Yeah, no. Chris' cubicle IS across the way from mine. That is, when he's here and not in Chi-town.

You'd know me more as One Bad Monkey on the forum. :hiding:

Had to be, but I wasn't going to blow your cover. You answered me directly as GHS and I had asked your alter-ego OBM. All good with me though. Haven't been able to check the SoundCloud recording just yet.

Heh, my alter-ego. But since they both wear glasses, which is which?! It wasn't that much of a secret, given that I did have to state my new position/affiliation in my profile.

We're looking at setting up a commercial account, so at least during the weekdays (because honestly, you're never really "off the clock" in a social media position), I'm going to be handling everything from this from now on.
