The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

I see that you have a PDR and an
LA-1A, would you mind giving a quick compare/contrast of the two? Had the LA-1A, felt guilty and sold it and have a PDR on the way.

Why the guilt ? It’s all fun over here. I’m the ultimate weekend wannabe hhahahah.

move only had the PDR since Friday. Initial thoughts are I really like it. Easy power requirements. Colors the tone favorably for me. I got both versions. The SE is definitely darker.

with the space requirements and power requirements i still prefer the la1a. Like the roundness it gives me and the boost is nice. My favorite comp but the PDR is fantastic In it’s own right.

That’s three very good boards there. How the heck do you choose which one before walking out the door?

roll of the dice I guess. Whatever I’m in the mood for. As this thread suggests it’s just differences in taste in all the good pre/di’s

though that road house meme a couple pages ago got me thinking of a new bar rig

grace design bix > PDR > pork and pickle or jptr jive > Broughton hpf > tuner

I have another board with a slo on it but lent it to my brother. As he’s thinking of getting a slo. He has a nux right now because of this thread and loves it.

The lack of even so much as a Worship gig just had me questioning the need for a $500 compressor. To be fair though, part of the money from the sale got me a PDR that will be here Tuesday. So, obviously not too guilty

Pretty awesome little pedal. I’m enjoying it. Still not sure if I prefer the vactrol version

So I have a Khan DI coming in a few days. My usual pedal order starts with my tuner>CaliCB>B3K>Panda FI>Nux>RME Babyface>board/recording interface. I use the RME as mixer as I frequently also have a synth I swap out on.

Now add a Khan and an FDeck into the mix and where would you put them? I will also be trying the Khan with a WJ Pre like @benjobass.

Thanks

Personally, so far I prefer the Khan dead last. It can sound good in line with other effects as well to add tubey goodness out of the 1/4", but the whole point to me is to take advantage of its fantastic DI, which sounds great, even in passive mode.

Last, directly before recording interface/board.

Starting to contemplate flipping my hyper luminal comp for a Effectrode La1a. All you guys got me lusting lol. I'm looking into that and maybe upgrading my iem mixer from the Behringer p16m to the new midas dp48. Otherwise I think I'm pretty close to my personal tonal perfection atm

I have the feeling i am finally close to personal tonal perfection too. I also am using a hyper luminal (which i love) and a Two Notes Le Bass tube preamp. that's it besides my Ampeg BA 115 and fretless Fender Jazz. simplicity is it for me. I play in jazz trios so don't need much else.

Nice setup man. The hyper luminal is a good pedal for sure just I went from using a ehx black finger to it tho and I miss abit of it's added tube butteryness the blackfinger was just abit too noisey and used a huge powersupply so I ended up selling it. The effectrode La1a looks to be a much better design getting similar sound without the noise issues or weird powersupply.
