I watched most of that demo and the demo he did for the PE5. Great demos! Thank you
I had a revelation as I lay in bed unable to sleep. I started thinking about my board. When I tried the Slampegg, it was at the end of the chain just in front of the PE5. At the beginning of the chain (just after the tuner) is my always-on Fatboost v.1. It naturally has a bit of a smiley-face EQ built in and also a boost in the low mids. I tried placing the Slampegg out in front and volume-matched A/Bing the FB and Slampegg as best I could (using headphones), and it sounded really really good. I did remove the PE5 from the chain; plugging straight into my little practice amp - so I could use headphones. Once everyone else wakes up - I will try through the PE5 into power amp and cabs and do the A/B again!

Some of you may "duh, it's a no-brainer the Slampegg would sound better on bass than the Fat Boost," but you'd be only mostly right. The FB has its own mojo going on, but ultimately after A/B testing, the clarity of a more neutral (or even slight boosted) midrange and solidity of the lows without the lower-mid congestion was absolutely apparent using the Slampegg out front. I find I am running the bass and treble pots at 3 o'clock to get a more balanced mid profile. It is a beautiful thing and will most likely kick the FB off the board as my always-on first stage (for now). It works GREAT with the PJB PE5 bringing up the rear!

I have personally gone the route of having separate Preamp and DI. Why? Because I am a glutton for G.A.S.
I don't even use a preamp. Empress Bass Compressor to REDDI to glorious tone.

i also prefer using a separate preamp and DI, mainly because I like to run a compressor (and usually some other stuff) post preamp.
I find the subtle tone shaping ability of the empress to be key to my trying to achieve a tube amp sound from pedals. It helps me achieve what I've used various preamps for previously.
Yes, I waited until the newer batch showed signs of working the way they should.
So I'm playing a jazz gig tonight. It's been a while. We've been practicing in the drummers garage and using amps (obviously) instead of IEM's. I have a Genzler MG350 to an MG12T-V cab. I am using my board for my tuner and Empress Bass Compressor. It sounds great. B string is thunderous. It again makes me wonder if I really need a $900 tube DI for my DI/IEM gigs.
Recently picked up a DSM/Humboldt Simplifier. I like the option for parallel signal chains on my board (plus the headphone out is super handy for practicing), but I also have an RNDI which I love.
Might be dumb/redundant, but I was thinking about putting the RNDI after the Simplifier...or is the Simplifier DI good enough? Any thoughts?

I have a simplifier, it's a great piece. But I would think the RNDI would come last because it's used mostly for studio use correct?

After reading this complete thread and weighing all my options I decided against real tubes and bought a Tech 21 VT Bass DI. Good enough for my amateur stuff, gives me both a bit of SVT and/or B-15N flavour, can be powered by the mixer/interface, and I have a parallel out for a clean bass signal. All that I'd need. But thanks to everyone, your input was a great help.
Yeah that's my question, since the Simplifier is basically a DI as well. Previously used the RNDI as my DI (obviously haha), but wanted parallel signal, analog sim, and a headphone practice option so picked up the DSM.
Only issue is RNDI is 1/4" in, and the sum out of the Simplifier is XLR. So is it worth it to try to run the RNDI after the DSM or is the DI part of the Simplifier good enough?
Mostly for live audio btw
From what I've read the simplifier's XLR is fine but if it's something out the RNDI you like run it last otherwise I believe the simplifier's XLR out is good
