The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

Checking back in to endorse Sonic Farm and the awesome 2di4 tube preamp/DI. (Thank you Scuba.)

I managed to blow up the input stage with excessive signal from a hot, active bass. Boris volunteered to fix it under warranty.

Since getting it back, I have been more careful with levels. :smug: This thing is just huge and perfect. :thumbsup:

I agree. These DIs are typically used with keyboards too. They typically have line level outputs. Also, I think you would have heard pretty hard clipping before it went poof.

Hi,
JT here.. the pad can cut about 6dB which is usually enough for most onboard active preamps. It’s also very transparent. You can also install a 12AT7 in V1 if you require less gain on the input stage.

I'm a subscriber to the "you can have too much of a good thing" theory. For instance, I don't like my Effectrode LA-1A into the front of my Super bassman. I feel like it gets too mushy.
LA-1A into some of my Solid state Preamps such as my THDI, VT Bass Deluxe, Barber Linden have been some of my favourite tones.

A friend of mine works for Laney and has been telling me he's a massive fan of their new Digbeth Preamp. I do want to get hold of one to try. Anyone tried it?

I thought that when I ran the LA-1A into my REDDI. I use an Empress instead. I wish I had kept the LA-1A to use with my SS Genzler combo amp though.

I bought a Broughton P15 and it arrived over the weekend, just in time for a gig Sunday afternoon. I hadn't used the D800 in a while, so I'm not sure what effect it had. Sound guy said FOH was great. Do most folks run thought the preamp or bypass?

I typically run the outboard preamps into the effect return on the amp, and bypass the amp pre.
