I just saw the movie The boy in the srtiped Pajamas, and after listening to slayer's Angel of Death and reading more about it i got really into learning more about what happened, sadly i regret some of it, there are a lot of stories that talk about solidarity and courage and stuff like that but there are many others that are heart breaking..

Anyway the point of this thread is, is there any chance of something like the holocaust happen again this day and age?

Similar things have happened, but perhaps not on the same scale:

1. Ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Srebrenica_massacre

2. The Khmer Rouge's killings in Cambodia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Killing_Fields

3. Rwandan Genocide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rwandan_genocide

4. Darfur (Sudan) at the moment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Darfur#Mortality_figures

So yeah, there's a chance it could happen again.

the un can only do what its members want to do. the organisation itself doesn't have any power. if you don't like the un go complain to the members, notably the us, russia and china. it's those three that block any real decision or action.

to the op, i doubt that organised murder on a scale like the holocaust will take place again. i don't think that the examples mark gave are comparable. stuff like that will happen again and again unfortunatley.

I'd rather discuss this part... :eyebrow:

Never regret learning. Anything.
That's all well and good, but I can certainly imagine situations where a young person may "regret" leanring (in the sense that it makes him feel bad) about some of the more graphic details of things that went on during the holocaust like Mengele's experiments on young Jewish men etc. Whilst I do think its important that we preserve these tales so that the horrors are not diminished, its not always something that a young person needs to know the detail of until they are ready. Its not as black and white as you make it out to be.
