The 605 is made of Ash and the 505 is made of mahogany. I personally prefer the tone of the 505 (and certainly the price).

I've never been a believer in body woods making a big difference in the tone of an instrument. If I played a 505 and a 605 side by side blind folded, I couldn't tell you which was which. But I can tell a difference and I do have a preference.

I would recommend either one though. They both play like butter.

I just really love non-painted, stone cold sexy wood finished basses. If they are basically the same guitar, I'll probably opt for the mahogany 505. still pretty darned sexy.

I concur, King. I have a 506, and I really like its sound. I tried a 706(has a maple top), but I liked the toneof the straight mahogany better. Both were excellent basses. Personal preference in tone was the deciding factor.

For some reason, and for the life of me I can't explain why, the 700/705/706 series sounds "darker" to me than the 500/505/506. You would think that with the maple top it would sound brighter, if anything.

But oh are they beautiful...

I agree the 700 series are beautiful. That black-on-maple was hard to overcome. Something about the mids that just caused me to gravitate to the 506. I would not have been disappointed either way. The other factor that helped is that I wound up getting the506 used from a fellow TB'er. Excellent bass and a very reasonable price.

Nice natural 605. It's a good look. I had my natural 600 up FS for a while, but with no takers, I'm taking it back into the fold. It's my only 4 string, so I'm going to string it cello (CGDA), as I am doing some cello arranging for my band, and one other project (my wife is the cellist!).

Indeed - Friend of mine plays such a bass - that sound made me fan of ibanez SRs and made me eventually buy one!!

@cliff: Very very nice bass! I know how it sounds, it is just wonderful! Plus: It looks awesome!!

But i feel that the wood is abit drier than it should be, any idea what i can do to rectify that problem?

That is the best deal EVER! Great Bass

For care of the wood I would suggest Warwick Surface Finisher Wax If you live somewhere in Europe but if you live here in the States it is extremely hard to find.
The next best thing is, "Howard's Feed-N-Wax"

Its made of beeswax, carnauba wax and orange oil and you can get it at Home Depot for around $10

And can someone tell me exactly what it is? I think it's a SR305 or SR405, depending on when it was made, but I don't know for sure.

If I knew the serial number, I could tell you when it was made, and figure out which model it is. Also, it's likely that the model number is stamped in the neck pocket and the heel of the neck.

That was my dream bass for a long time. Still the most beautiful finish I've ever seen.
