Interesting! I think I'll stick with my 505 plans. Unless I get seduced by an entry level Warwick or Jazz bass.

I don't really dig the "aggressive" sound, but I'm going to replace the pickups when I get my 505 anyway.
I've switched from Ibbys to Warwicks and back to Ibbys 
In the end I decided it was not worth to try and adapt to a different bass & brand, since I felt right at home playing Ibanez basses. I won't go into details, but I'm kind of dissapointed of W and their current direction and sadly they've started to cut corners and slack just like any other brand - and I refuse to pay extra just for a pretty logo on the headstock. The only good thing about their basses is the tone, the rest...not so much.

What worries me about Warwick is a) I like a lightweight bass, b) a highly playable neck and c) it seems like their entry level models might not be geared toward the hifi, funk tones I want--more rock instead.
I really love the feel of Ibanez basses. That neck can't be beat. It's almost to the point that I'm willing to sacrifice a fair amount on other fronts just to have it.

You didn't hear this from me, but Guitar Center's used gear site has them between $300 and $450 all the time.
The only cons I can think of are:
- The bass will be used, and you have to rely on GC employees to describe the condition...
- You have no idea what year it will be from, and have to judge based on the picture.
- If there isn't one at your local GC, they'll have to ship it from another store, which could take time.
- You're buying from GC, a con for some...
The 505 has a mahogany body vs the 605 with an alder body. The electronics, sound, dimensions, and hardware are identical. Which looks the best to you is the question. I purchased a 600 in walnut flat because I think the walnut flat is much nicer looking than the brown 505.
1993-1996 the SR500s were made with light American maple.
1997-2003 there were no SR500s (they did have the SR480 until 2003, when they had the SR490, both mahogany)
In 2006 they started making SR500s with mahogany bodies.

SR505 with maple neck. I need some better pics but the lighting in my house is horrible.
Btw, I'm a little confused by the switch on the SR500s. I's supposedly a mid-scoop switch, but I really don't notice any difference when I mess with the switch. If my mids are turned up really high (which they never really are when I'm playing) and I flip the switch down, the volume seems lower. That's all I notice. When I have my EQ set how I normally play, the switch makes absolutely no noticeable difference.

It's not a mid-scoop switch, it's a mid frequency selector switch.
Crank your mid knob and then flip the switch. It switches between "low mids" and "high mids". Experiment and find which one you like, including cutting the low or high mids. Or leave the mid control flat and ignore it. Up to you.
I've noticed some of the earlier mahogany SR500 models had the pickups closer to the bridge. I'm hoping to get one like that so that when I solo the neck pickup I'll get more of a p bass tone.
I'm in the same situation that you guys described, got really big into Warwick basses, but found after a little time with them that I don't like the feel or the heft. Ibanez has been there since I bought my first SR505 a week after I started playing bass back in 2006, and I've always wanted a new one since I sold it in 2007 (bad move
