I had an iceman last year that i bought on a whim. The body shape was the only significant difference from your SRX. I actually liked everything about it, except for the body shape, which i found neckheavy and uncomfortable. I bet if it was an SRX i would have kept it :D

Oh yeah! It sure looks the same Hardware wise :) It must have sounded AWESOME! Still The shape could be hard to use.

I feel ya, brother.

A few years back I wanted to pick up an inexpensive but playable electric six string for my son to learn on. Came home with a used Ibanez.

A few years later, I went to get myself an acoustic guitar. Actually went in to GC to buy a Fender stratacoustic--until I played it and nearly barfed. I then played every guitar in the store and walked out with... an Ibanez.

A couple of months ago, I decided to get back into music for realz. Went to get myself a bass. All ready to get myself a Fender Jazz. Walked out with an Ibanez SR300, because it was sexy, cheaper and so extremely playable.

And when I upgrade this bass, I might go for that Fender Jazz. Or maybe an entry level Warwick. But something tells me, it's the SR505 that I'll come home with in the end.

So I went back in today to try out the sr500 and I noticed that the low end of the instrument was... I don't think id say muddy but overly bassy even with the bass turned down on the eq, it made the lower notes hard to distinguish, anyone else find this with theirs? Or do you thi k it could be remedied with new brighter strings ?

I personally blame the preamp. I am not a fan of Ibanez stock preamps and neither are most other people.

I haven't heard the pickups without the preamp. They might be fine.

A string change is a much cheaper "upgrade" than a preamp, but may not cure the "muddy" low end.

Good to know thanks, although that is really too bad because the sr500 was the only bass in the little shop in the town I'm staying that really pulled me in, only thing is I don't know if I wanna put the money in and be dissatisfied in a few months with the muddiness, and the thing is it's buy this one or be without a bass for six months until I get back to Canada to my other basses

Well, a string change is pretty cheap, and may make the tone at least bearable. How bad is the muddyness? Is it something you can live with if it's alleviated at all by a string change?

I love everything about the SR500 except the tone (which I think is useable, but nothing to write home about). For me personally, it would be worth upgrading to get a good sound out of.

But I honestly can't say what difference or how much of a difference a new preamp, new pickups, and/or new strings will make.

You'll have to decide what's worth it.

EDIT: On my old SR405, I rewired the pickups straight to the jack because I didn't like the preamp. The tone was pretty similar to when the preamp was flat, but it wasn't bad. Not muddy, but not very "smooth" either. Very "raw".

Currently using D'Addario XL Nickels on my 506, and I like them well enough. I can't say they are the perfect match, and some experimenting will continue to find the ideal sound. Haven't been disappointed in the lows at all. Thinking of trying D'addy ProSteels or DR High Beams. I don't slap much, so I'm not necessarily looking for brightness for that purpose, although it might help for when I do. Just want to find that one string that is a great match.

The only other thing on my Ibanez wish list is a SR4005E. :D

I had ProSteels on my SR405 for 2 years and don't really recommend them for Ibanez basses. I've been much, much happier with Circle K strings.

If you like sticking to major string brands...DR makes a string for everybody. ;)

Well, I do like the Daddy nickels on my Jazz bass. And I play Zyex A & E on my upright to much satisfaction. I know DR makes a good product, and some local players I get to hear now and then use them. I'll check out the Circle K strings. Any info to be aware of with them?

Circle K specializes in "balanced tension" strings.

The only issue I've ever had with them was they were a little slow shipping one of my sets (they were moving their shop at the time and some orders were delayed).

I was just checking them out. Balanced tension seems to be the way to go. Based on your experience, do you have any recommendation regarding which gauge might work/sound better with the 500 series? Looking at 028-.130 set, since that is what I'm familiar with.

Also thinking that the balanced tension would be a great add to my Jazz fiver. Consistency is important for me in that regard.

For a 5 or 6 string set I recommend at least a .136 set. I personally would get a .142 set.

These strings are very flexible and have a lot of "give" for hex core strings, so I like higher gauges with them.

I had the .136 on my Ibanez SR405 and they were the best strings I ever had on it. Best B string for sure.

Understood on the .136's. What would be the benefit of.142's? Any drawbacks? Not too thuddy/muddy? BTW, No prob on a slightly bigger C. I don't need my high C to sound particularly thin or guitarlike. Singing, yes, but full. I'm thinking I'll try out a set on the 506. I've got a little dough to spare right now.

Curious... Ultimately, the Jazz V is going to get a fretless neck. Have a Audere drop-in preamp and SD Quarterpounders I'm putting in this weekend. Neck to come later. Anyone have any experience with these on a fretless? (I'm currently going through the thread for sound samples in case someone posted any.)

I haven't tried the .142 set yet but I really want to. Circle K makes even heavier sets for extra low tunings and everything I've heard from people who have used them has been good.

The .136 set I have tried and definitely liked. Very clear.

I haven't tried them on a fretless.
