The Ibanez Club (Part 5)

Hey there Ibby fans:

I just picked this beauty up in the classifieds, and have a question about the controls.

'Been searching around, and coming up empty so far. I must say, I'm a bit disappointed in Ibanez's lack of customer support for basses before 2005, but that's another story. And besides, I have the world's greatest collection of bass experts at my fingertips right here. This is an '84 Roadstar II RB850 (passive.)

So what I'm finding is three knobs. First is a blend, pans between the neck and bridge pups. Next are two pots controlling the individual pups. They both have a push/click switch between single and double coil. Here's where I get to wondering; the bridge pup knob gives me a tone control as expected. The neck pup knob is a simple volume control instead of tone. I don't see why that would be the normal setup, and it sure doesn't seem as useful as dual tone controls would be. So- is there something amiss, or is that how they're supposed to work? I can definitely get good sounds the way it is now, but I'm OCD enough to want it working 100%.

Other than that, it's a killer bass. She's in pretty good shape, has nice ergonomics, and sounds great.

First off.. Congratulations on your new favorite bass!:hyper:

The first nob is the the neck/bridge pan, second is the volume / neck pup single-double coil, third is the tone / bridge pup single-double coil. I know it seems a little odd at first, but the simplicity of it will grow on you.

Enjoy your new RB850. These beauties are built like tanks with out the weight. IMO it is one of the most versatile 4 stringer's out there. Get it set up right and you will absolutely love it.

OK- that does make sense if I just think about it a bit differently. Funny how a wrong assumption can lead one astray. Yeah, I'm going to really dig this bass. Thanks for the help!

A Bean bass is one that Travis Bean was in on. Examples would be the RB888, RB999 or the ever elusive "Sting" Bean bass, the RB666 (If I remember right, this is the fretless version of the RB999)

Although these are all similar in design to the RB850, they have a much smaller head and I do believe the body is scaled down as well.

If I won $16m I'd blow it all on Ibanez gear, but I refuse to by anything that says Gio. I haven't heard anything good about a Gio so I won't try my hand. Wish I could post my collection, but it's only a bass and a limited edition guitar... :/

Here is my GSR100. I have to say I wasn't sure about how it will sound (because I didn't play it before I bought it... yes, I know that is a crime :hiding: ) but after some rehearsals I felt it was pretty good. Maybe the last owner changed the electronics or I don't know what happened before, but if it sounds great, that is all that matters to me. :D

Hi Ibanez lovers,

I use to be an Ibanez player in a 2nd half of 80s, I owned and played Ibanez Musician MC2924 active bass, as far as I remember it was model 1987., but not 100% sure, maybe '86.?

However, ...after many years I recently discovered nice new actual Ibanez model in 5 string version in the store near me.

I'm talkin' 'bout Ibanez Prestige SR5005E OL and I think it's the top of the range of SR series Made in Japan?

Here's one quick view from the store:

Bass is brand new and it's on special discount -25% stock price and I could get another -5% price drop on my Musicians Union membership card.

I tried it twice in the store and I'm really delighted, ...I think I'm just one step before I buy that beauty, as soon I come back from summer vacation, I hope! :)

What do Ya think Ibanez guys about that baby?

Some special comments, advices, experience, for/against...etc.?

Someone posted "ibanez bass needs work 30$" on craigslist, he delivers it to me and I notice its a SR300 (350$ new) , it needs the nut glued down , strings, a couple washer/nuts for the pots, a knob , misc screws, battery tray is bust off, but ding/dent/chip wise its in really good shape.

I actually got it all together with some random parts I have sitting around from free, parted up junk basses. It plays great, I need to get a battery box, truss rod cover and stacked knob for it-i think total i will be into it is a few hours of work and 50$.
