Well, I went ahead and installed Jamup (Free) and bought the Bass Expansion pack. I played around with it (using my Peavey AmpKit Link) for a while. It's nice. But, so far, I'm not hearing any special difference from AmpliTube, as far as the bass tone goes.

BUT, I'm listening to them all through my single armature IEMs - which don't give the best bass response. Maybe it's time to go ahead and order the parts and make myself a a set of triple armature earmold IEMs, so I can really actually enjoy practicing in total (external) silence. Anything bigger (e.g. real headphones, a headphone amp, or an actual sound system) would defeat the purpose, for me. I carry my iRig (now, my AmpKit) and my in-ears with me everywhere. I have basses in 3 different places where I stay regularly. By just taking the iRig and in-ears, I can practice wherever I am, and without annoying the neighbors.

I don't really care about using any of this stuff as a preamp or effects board for live sound. For that, I am perfectly happy with my tube amps and cabs. Or my SABDDI, if it's that kind of gig.

You must use a decent pair of IEM/ headphones in order to hear your sound. Your IEM are you cabinet!! :)
There is a huge different in tone between Ampkit, Amplitube and Jamup. I will rank them as follows regarding tone possibilities
1) Jamup wins with ANY amp from the bass pack including the BDDI
2) Amplitube wi the B15R
3) Ampkit with the Ashdown ABM 900 head and the trace cab.

I have a Sansamp PBDDI, an Oxford and some more pedals. I will easily choose the Jamup other these for any purpose.

Here is all what one needs, the iRig interface which works quite well for low gain settings, or "sound card" device, such as the Apogee Jam which is a D/A converter which use the digital docking port.
On iPad 3and older or iPhone 4S and older one needs the 30pin to USB camera kit.
On iPad mini, iPod and iPhone 5 one use the lightning to USB camera kit.

Btw, the iRig in this picture is to be shipped to who ever wants it, totally FREE!
I've treated this iRig very well, and I've never over clocked it! :)

PauBass, I'm glad that Duke sorted out the 30-pin vs headphone jack connectivity question you had.

Some people were able to use the iRig just fine; it never worked for me because the level of noise was too high. I bought the (Apogee) Jam and connect it to my iPhone via the 30-pin interface. The signal going in is much cleaner.

Do you always put your effects AFTER the amp, or does it depend on the preset? I typically run all my pedals BEFORE the amp.

Wow, I missed a lot while I slept!!

As Duke stated, the 30-pin interface is the way to go. What cracks me up is when people try to plug in stuff (like giant can headphones) that they KNOW doesn't work with their iDevice, then dismiss iOS amp sims as a whole based on the limitations of their device.

Do a bit of research before buying. For live use, a headphone amp is gonna help, or in my case a small format mixer to add extra channels to your in ears (feed from the main mix, a "more me" channel). If you're playing just in your bedroom, and you MUST use those giant studio headphones that you wouldn't use when just listening to music, be prepared for problems.

That said, I picked up a set of Ultimate Ears Triplefi 10's from Amazon last year for $180, and they're great for listening to music, but excel for live bass. The triple drivers work great for translating the low end of a bass without farting out.

Not trying to be confrontational, but most of these problems could be avoided just by knowing the limitations of your device. Don't try to run Audiobus with multiple loops and expect a glitch free performance on a 3GS. It won't work, and most should know that, but when it doesn't work they automatically dismiss the apps.

These apps all (except AT at the moment) perform great when you follow the specs. Jamup is still the clear winner.

When it comes to various OD/ distortion which I'm so fond of (... :) ) I've tried them both before or after. I think I've posted somewhere the BDDI before and after the amp.

When it comes to other effects, haven't tried the reverb/ MuTron before the amp, I should try that! ;)
Otherwise I use the other effects very seldom.
This one great point in Jamup, one can choose where to place the effects.

BTW, you have to cut down on your beauty-sleep if you feel like you have lost a lot while sleeping!! :D

I'm using an Irig for when I'm just having a quick practice but largely the Alesis IO Dock is where it's at, if you're going to be heavily using fx you're going to want that ability to turn them on and off with your feet and if you're using any other interface that uses the dock connector you're fresh out of luck (unless you find a workable bluetooth solution)

I'm a recent convert to Jamup, I was happy with Amplitube until it stopped opening, but largely it's because of Loopy HD and Audiobus. I've been messing with Loopy HD for months but it's suffered issues such as having to have some outboard gear to get fx (ie pedalboard before Ipad) and there were some midi issues. All of these have been fixed and now I have an insane portable looper rig.

Currently using a Line 6 M9 as a midi controller while I seek out something better, I was looking at the Softstep especially with the Alesis having a USB port I thought I'd be able to hook them up with that and still have a midi keyboard there for synths, but no such luck.

A quick question, I'm looking at ditching some fx because I largely use them at home and I think I could really make a go of Jamup for when I'm in the studio making weird noises (after all I've got the Moog App :D)

I would first check out the packs available and see if they include the defects you'd want. Jamup has quite a few of those available (or a working counterpart). Many of Jamup's effects are modeled after Boss effects, and I've yet to find one I didn't like.

It really depends. Part of the reason that I'm running the free version of Jamup was that I just don't need all the guitar stuff. For my purposes it ended up being better to just buy them individually (with the exception of the bass pack).
