This is my first post. I've been lurking for a couple of months, but this thread got me to register. Can anyone speak to the differences between the iRiffPort, which is a 30 pin adapter, and the Apogee Jam, which is also 30 pin? I'm specifically concerned with which adapter can be used with the most apps.

I got the iRiff at GC for $60 last week and have used it with the PocketGK, and it is ok. I can't receive calls while using it as an amp though, and I get a little distortion. I contacted pocketgk and they said it was because my iOS is old (5.0). Not sure if I should take it back and get the Apogee. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The only guy that could give us a Tech lesson about this devices from an electrical engineer point of view is Steve R, so please wake up Steve! :D
The reason I went for the Apogee is because it will work with my Mac or my iPad.
I tried to understand the specs of the iRiffPort, but there is not much info about it on their web site.
As far as I can tell, the iRiffPort should work with any app.
What do you mean by distortion? What kind of settings do you use on the GK app?
I actually haven't used the Apogee with the GK app yet, as the app is quite limited. But the GK app is capable of giving the GK tone clean or dirty. Do you use the boost channel? Do you use the horn? Etc?
You can take a snapshot picture of your settings and post it here. Which bass do you use? And which headphones?
Remember the iRiffPort will not manage to drive a "heavy" headphones!

Aside from a practice amp, I've been more intrigued by the idea of using my iPad as a configurable multi effect. Is anyone doing anything like that? What kind of effects are available? I've been looking for a good iOS synth effect á la the EHX micro synth or the BSW.

Here is all what one needs, the iRig interface which works quite well for low gain settings, or "sound card" device, such as the Apogee Jam which is a D/A converter which use the digital docking port.
On iPad 3and older or iPhone 4S and older one needs the 30pin to USB camera kit.
On iPad mini, iPod and iPhone 5 one use the lightning to USB camera kit.

Just to clarify, the Apogee Jam comes with a 30 pin cable, so you don't need the camera adapter. For the Mini, iPhone5 and new iPad. you'll need the Lightning to 30 pin adapter or the usb camera adapter.

So to make sure I understand I would need an Apogee Jam AND the Lightning to camera adapter? (I have an iRig but I can't say I've ever been happy with the results. Through headphones the darn thingies barely audible).

I contacted iRiff about the distortion and they said to turn down the boost and volume at my bass, which I had tried before. Didn't make much of a difference. I am using AKG K240 studio headphones and a 78P bass with old EMG pickups. I haven't used the app in a week, since it cuts my phone out, and I don't want to update my iOS to 6.0.1. I'm thinking about getting an Ipad to use for all this stuff.

Are those good headphones to use in this application or would they work better with the Apogee?

The Apogee Jam is dealing with the sound into the iOS device. The sound out is through the headphone socket. So, using AKG K240 headphones, you will need an headphone amp in order to drive them properly. When I use my AKG K701 I send the sound from the headphone socket into my headphone amp. Also a mini mixer will do the job.

Some devices like the iTrack or the ART dual-pre do both A/D and D/A conversions (so not using the headphone socket at all) just as the iRiffPort, but the ART Dual Pre and the iTrack have headphone amp integrated as well.

I do not have the complete list in my head, but in Amplitube iOS I do like the following effects:
Møller OD
Fender Blender
Fender phaser
Slash X-chorus
Envelope filter (use just as a kind of EQ)

On Jamup:
TurboRat
BDDI
MuTron

I like more pedal on both Ampkit and Jamup but I can't remember all the names.

The Chorus that comes with Jamup (the Boss copy) sounds great with the Redhead amp and a touch of reverb.

I'm also a fan of the Mutron with any amp but the Redhead. The Redhead has a really clear midrange voicing, and with the Mutron it can get overbearing. Now with the GK amp, the Mutron is totally funky.

I run the noise filter at the lowest possible setting to get rid of the hiss (if needed). The noise filter in Jamup doesn't kill your tone as much as the one in Amplitube.

The BDDI sounds great by itself, and is extremely tweakable. With an amp, you gotta watch how hard you push it or it'll get pretty hairy really fast.

With Jamup to get the really good effects you have to buy them in-app, but they're great sounds and really cheap. I've yet to buy a pedal that I didn't like in Jamup.

I've been experimenting with this idea for live guitar playing. The sound is good. The ease of changing tones is good. The problem I have is with keeping the i device handy and managing cabling. I either have to put the i device somewhere and walk to it when I want to change something, or I attach the i device to my arm, or instrument, and then I drag the cables around when I move around. So far, my choice has been to "park" the i device near the amp, and not move around much.

Many of the apps spoken of here would do a good job a sing your "effect/pedal board" just bypass the amp section or as in the case of AT turn the amp off and that would bypass the amp cab and mic portion...having to stay close by and not walking around too much..... this will always be a problem unless you go wireless signal but you still have to walk over to your iDevice or pedal board or whatever to change your settings........
Unless you have your own personal effect board changer.....like a trunk monkey. :)

I was thinking about putting the iOS set-up in a bypass loop on my board and using it for one effect at a time. I could set up certain effects in-between songs, and then be able to switch those effects on and off with my foot. This would be in combination with other actual pedals. It would be nice for those effects that you only have a use for on one or two songs.

As I said though, it would be really interesting to use primarily as a synth effect, but it looks like the only offering so far would be to use that Mutron clone along with a fuzz. I like the Micro Synth clone they have in Guitar Rig, but there's no iOS version of that...

Yep. I tried attaching to mic stand, last weekend. It was good to have i device always near-by. Cabling became the problem. Specifically, the weight of the cables hanging down from the i device. The old wind-the-cable-around-the-mic-stand-post didn't support the cable weight well enough. Gotta find a better way to attach all the stuff to the mic stand. Maybe just wind it around and a couple tape wraps. I'll try that out next time.

That's one of my concerns when I start playing live again, the weight of the cables. I'm thinking about setting up a special "snake" of the cabling in and out of the iPhone, that could be clipped to the mic stand or velcro'd in place.
