The John East preamp club

I emailed John about the advantages if any, of going 18v, and if it extends batt life, but I have not heard back from him. Maybe he drops by here from time to time, and will answer the questions.

Hey John East Fans - quick question. One of the pots on my Squire VM passive jazz crapped out on me and I was thinking of replacing the whole works with a East (J-tone 01 active and full passive) preamp. Anyone know if these will fit the VM cavity?

TBH, unless you want an active preamp id just replace the pot.

If you do want to fit a J-retro, you'll need enough space for the battery. If it's got standard routing it should fit, but I'm not sure. The required cavity depth is 32mm or greater... If you've got that then it should be a drop-in. I'd screen the control cavity and pickup routing with copper foil, while you're at it. Make sure the pickup and control cavities are electrically connected and leave some copper foil running up to the preamp cover plate so that's grounded too.

I have a East/ACG EQ-01 (the filter pre) in my Pedulla Thunderbuzz 6 (with Nordstrand Big Blades) and have been trying to get the associated tone control but haven't been able to find one - I've emailed a few times... but does anyone have one or know where it is installed? afaik its a dual-gang pot so I'm guess each pickup has its own pot, but am not sure if its before the low-pass filter stack or after the stack...

The EQ-01 is crazy powerful - i mainly use it bring out the mwah on my fretless from the bridge pickup, but also use it for a great dub sound or a vintage thub. it def has a learning curve, and i find hte 2 low pass filters more useful then the high-pass filter, but it could really use a overall tone roll-off...

anyone have a schematic/diagram? thx!

I have my black stacked John East knobs taken care of. Now I need to find 3 single black knobs. Interestingly, John East in the UK is out of stock. BestBassGear.com confirmed they no longer carry East knobs and don't plan to in the future.

I found them on Ali Express. Warning: there are many other finishes, so if you're distracted by pretty colours... maybe don't go there :D

Apologies that you've not heard from us ref passive tones. I just took a look but I'm not sure of your email.

We had an issue for a while in getting the right pots (custom), we have them now mounted to circuit boards for easy install.
(They are a dual A250K, a separate pot & cap for each pickup but on the same knob shaft. This allows the pickup signals to remain independent with a different HPF filter setting for each pickup.)

We'll make it an accessory soon, but by all means, email again ASAP, I'll look out for your email.
