Can I get a number? I know it's not a bass, but it is a Krappy. It's a 17 1/2" scale ukelele on top and a 17 1/2" scale mandolin on the bottom. I call it the ukemando.
There are piezo pickups in the bridge. Nothing sounds as good as a nice, hollow body uke, but it does a very nice job with a little eq. The mando actually sounds really nice. He does good work with the Krap he finds laying around the shop.

I'm considering reaching out to the Krappy crew to have an instrument built, primarily for tapping. I read through the whole thread here and it seems the few mentions of touch-style have been well received / implemented by Krappy, but I want to validate that statement with you guys.
Tappers; are you happy with the performance of touch-style on a Krappy (action, electronics, etc)? If so, do you have a point of reference with other established touch-style instrument makers?
I'd like to have a 12 string built in straight fourths (BEADGC-FBEADG), maybe multi-scale / fanned. To give some context, I know what I'm getting in to a little; I've been tapping on bass for 20+ years (thanks Stu Hamm
), I'm a pianist, a mediocre guitar player, and I previously owned a 10 string Chapman Stick. The problem I've had over the years using anything other than custom basses is string spacing.
I'm a 19-20 mm guy through and through. When it comes to guitar, I learned on a classical nylon string (significantly wider than an electric). Finding a production tapping instrument with wide spacing appears to be non-existent. Even the NS/Stick and Bass Stick are too narrow for my tastes, not to mention they don't go far enough into the upper registers that I'm looking for. After inquiring with some other custom makers, I'm not convinced that the price/value equation is there, at least for something that I'm not 100% sure how it's going to actually function in the end.
Thoughts?

That's Kraptastic! I'm thinking of having him build a double neck 5 string/6 string in some bizarro shape.
This is my first voyage into tapping, so this all my opinion...
I'm not going to lie to you, for this price you're not getting a Stradivarius. That being said, I was quite happy with the quality of the instrument I received.
What I got was a 10 string tapper where the frets go right to the edge of the neck and no further. That neck is laser-straight, not a string buzz to be found. It was just about in tune straight out of the box. The pick-ups, I believe, are home-made by Kevin. My ear isn't sensitive enough to quibble about highs or lows, but I am happy with the tone. The controls are two volume knobs, because the bass side is much louder than the treble side. I fix highs and lows at the amp. You can send Kevin your own pick-ups if you like. I'm not that fancy.
You can email or call and tell Kevin what you are looking for and he will really try to accomodate you. Guy answers emails so quick, I wonder how he has time to build.
Here's an example of his customer service: I asked for no marker dots on the finger board because I thought I'd be better at this than I really am. He sent along a baggie of dots for me to put on when I finally wised up. Which I did. Heh.
Do you use re-entrant tuning (high G) on the uke, or in-line low G ? Kevin made me an electric uke several years ago. 17" scale, which is tenor uke scale. I go with low G tuning. (= the 4 highest pitch strings on a guitar, if capo'd at the 5th fret). With the solid body and steel strings, and people all the time asking me what the $%& it is, I refer to it as an alto guitar as much as I do a tenor ukulele. Very cool ukemando, you got there, Mr. 37 !
I use a low g. It's funny. I use the ukemando for just a couple songs in a four hour cover band show and there's always people coming up to me asking about it and taking pictures of it.
Well, I pulled the trigger the other day on a krappy. 2 string fretless with McQuillan body...wish me luck!
