The Kustom Club

Just got these 2 days ago and used it at a gig yesterday. Sounds awesome.

23 days ago, I posted a pic of my 250 2x15 rig and am reporting that it is going to a new owner this weekend. After spending alot of tim"e with the rig, I find that I could not find tone I liked with the rig except through it with my jazz with flats.

The select a tone was always in the middle position for me and I felt like it needs a mid knob to be effective. I used an MXR pre amp with it and it sounded good and vintage. I also got great tone with the xotic BB pedal but I thought it was time to move on beyond the 'retro cool' factor of the amp.

I am actually replacing the rig with a GK I found on Craigslist mainly because of tone and weight. I do have to say the tone from the 250 souned good through my Bergantino 12" though.

Good luck to the owners here, the Kustoms are definitely unique!

Thanks guys! I belong to a small group of Kustom collectors....some of which have posted in this thread. We did this set up for outdoor shows. I have added a few more since the picture. Five of the amps were in use and the others on standby.

Speaking of Pawn Shops.......

I just scored this outfit a couple of days ago in my local pawn shop for $75.00!!!!! The amp is not working, which is why they blew the rig out for the cost of the pawn ticket.

The cabinet works fine, so I've been alternating between my Ampeg "mini-fridge" 100 watt SS amp, and my HammerTone 100-watt all-tube amp to check it out. The sound is VERY vintage, and the tone is cool if not driven too hard. I'm going to love having this around!

I just found this club, so I haven't read back yet to see if anyone is giving out numbers, but count me in! I have LOTS to learn about this great TnR equipment, and I have a feeling that I've just got started "acquiring" Kustom gear!

Its worth fixing. Maybe not financially, but because of the vintage tone and look. Find an amp tech who is experienced with the early 70s Acoustic amps, which these are very similar to. There should be a schematic stuck on the inside of the amp and if not I'm sure someone here could help provide one.

NICE GET!!!

And now for MORE good news.....I took that non-working Kustom K150-1 amp (from the amp/cab I turned up a few weeks ago at a pawn shop for $75.00) to a tech, and it turned out to only have a bad switch. Otherwise it was just FINE!

THIS was the culprit.....

It was the "Main Power" LICON switch that died, so we decided to use the identical (and still working) "Polarity" switch for the "Main Power" switch. I no longer needed the "Polarity" switch, since I had the tech upgrade my power cord from the original 2-prong to a 3-prong grounded cord. As a precaution, I also had him "zip tie" the body of the LICON switch, as these are known to get brittle over time, and separate from the threaded barrel.

My tech also complimented the original Kustom amp design as being "very robust, with quality parts throughout".

All I know is that it sounds GREAT hooked up to the Kustom 215-B Cabinet. I can now rock out my vintage Peavey basses on an age-appropriate Kustom rig, and Party Like It's 1972!!

I'm pretty sure you got your money's worth. ;)

That's in pretty nice cosmetic shape! The sparkle white is nice, but the sharpest Kustom I ever saw was a blue sparkle 3-15" K200B. The band was from a nearby prison, and they were excellent. (plenty of time to practice  )

...

Awesome! I'm envious, but very happy for you!!! :hyper:

Reminds me of the time I bought a non functioning, but otherwise nice Acoustic 370 head from a local music store about 10 years ago. Turned out that a poorly done solder connection at the factory back in the early '70s finally failed which in turn took out a resistor. Very obvious when I opened it up. New resistor, touched up some solder joints and it worked like a champ!

Love it when it's something simple!

Sound clips would be appreciated!!! :bassist:

Yep I have a kustom DE 300 HD.

Very very good price and value, awesome sound and a lot of adjustment dispite the appearance of basic EQ etc.

Looks to be well built, zero imperfections but wow is this thing big and heavy. Fan can be heard in a small room at practice and with gain a little buzz but to be honest so do all amps that I have had. I have the Kustom 4x10 cab as well.

I guess the trend is smaller but who wants to follow, I just remember the 1970's Kustom's standing out with a great sound, looks and being different. I believe kustom are ticking the same boxes here. Anyway us bass players have to lug the monster speaker cabs around so no real difference.

Just a quick note here, I have had a fair bit of experience of many manufacturers guitars and amps and have been let down on stage only by my most expensive purchases.

One last point, I am primarily a guitar player and my Fender Tele Deluxe with WRHB sounds unreal.... seriously thinking about this one amp for both bass and guitar. One happy Kustom owner.
