Thoughts:

If that bass plays as well as it looks, then you got it for about 1/4 what it is worth.

If the above is true, and you bought a fretless with no intention to play a fretless, then I guess you have obtained a very nice investment.

If the above is true, and you either keep this or put frets on this, you will have committed a sin beyond my understanding.

dude, thats amazing, Wal basses are my dream basses, they look amazing, they feel amazing, they sound amazing, oh god i want one soooooo bad. i read someplace that they go for like 7 grand or something. and have a 2 month waiting period. damn i want one. your a lucky man, especially for getting it for such a great price, i dont know where you live, but the shipping is probably going to be a bit pricey too, but with the money you saved, you should still get one heck of a deal, congrats man :) play it well

7 GRAND, ONLY A 2 MONTH WAITING LIST! Where did you hear that crap! I don't think there's a Wal on the planet that has ever gone for even close to 7 grand! They cost much much less than that new and because of the demand and the difficulty in obtaining a new one they're starting to climb into the upper 3k to 4k range in the used market (which from what I heard, they're starting to get more expensive used!). Also about the 2 month waiting list, I WISH! Holy crap that would be awesome. I've heard of speedy luthiers that don't even ship orders that fast. From what I've heard on various places ranges from just under 2 to over 4 YEARS! (not months) depending on many varibles such as when the order was placed, the complexity of the custom job, how busy Pete happens to be when you place your order et cetera. Anyway, whoever gave you your Wal information needs to get better information. Jeez 7 grand! that's an interesting figure to quote I've seen Foderas cheaper than that.

than a grand more than that!

I have seen that bass on eBay before from the same music shop. I even seriously considered purchasing it for the equivalent of $2K direct from the shop's web page. I exchanged emails with the shop about the bass and their return policy. Their policy of no refunds only exchanges if not satisfied ended my quest.

Despite my reservations about their shop policy I would have definitely been interested in an ebay purchase at this price point. Unfortunately, I have been to busy to check eBay lately. Congratulations, an all black fretless is just right in my sense of style.

If you get an experienced luthier to do the work, it shouldn't be much of a hassle. It's just if I had a bass that was that nice, I would want to make it my main bass. And as my main bass, I would want it to be fretted so that I could use it for most of what I play. I think it would be difficult to get Wal to do the work themselves, as they seem incredibly back ordered and have other stuff going on. I would be surprised if you "hated" the bass as a fretless.

Oh my god. You didn't seriously just buy that for that little . . . NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! You lucky son of a bass . . . . . you better play the hell out of that thing.

This is probably the only time that I wish I played left-handed, instead of being a lefty playing right.

I remember years ago in London there was a free ads paper called "loot" (I thinks its still around). Anyway, almost every day there was one or two WAL basses for sale (mostly fretless) ranging from about £350 to £700. I remember playing a WAL and could not see what all the fuss was about. The sound didn't really apeal to me either. The fact there was a lot for sale made me think that they weren't that great and I never bothered getting one.
