The mighty GK 400RB

Mine is the 2nd generation with the detachable power cord. I believe its from 92 if I remember correctly from how the serial numbers work.

I play it through an SWR bigfoot 212, 4 ohms of goodness

Yea mine also makes the exact same noise, plus the speaker vibrates when I switch it on.

All 400's and 800's do this. IIRC, a TB member with some tech knowhow compared the 400 and 800rb's to dragsters in that they have no protection circuitry at all. My 84 400 does the same thing, so I try to remember to have the master down before I power her up. Or wait to plug in the speaker until after power up.

I've bought my 400RB new in the mid 90s. Never missed a beat. Started off eq'ing the mids out, as you do, but over time I set it fairly flat, just boosting bass. Have recently bought a Fender Pro 800 as the little amp wasnt quite cutting a loud rock gig. Seems to loose its presence - but not complaining at all, been a great workhorse and virtually every sound you dial up is ruddy good

I just picked up a 2nd Gen 400RB and I am very very pleased. After trying everything from Markbass to Thunderfunk to AI to an Ampeg rack setup in the last 10 yrs (OCD I guess), I like this little guy as well or better than anything else I have messed with.

I bought it for $150 so I could move the power amp from my rack into the band PA rack for our subs. I was afraid I would lose the great sound of my SVP-II preamp, but it may be even easier to get the sound I want from the little GK. I need to check how it does at our next rehearsal, but the Ampeg pre may be going up on the auction block.

Man, i picked up a 400rb a couple months ago. Early 80's w/attached power cord, for an eeeeeeasy $80.

Since then, i haven't even touched my Peavey Mark VI, and my Kustom200 is seeing little-to-no use at all. I LOVE this thing.

I play a range of things, from bubble-gum power-pop to loud and abrhasive crusty stuff. I've been able to find tones for every one of these bands that sound supurb with the 400rb.

It was quite a 'whim' purchase, as i've been GASing for an 800rb for a while now... but so far the 400rb has handled everything i could throw at it...

I just got one a week ago, and played a gig two days ago, great sound. It's a version 1, red LED's and attached cord.
I still haven't figured out how rack ears would mount on it. It definintely doesn't have the threaded holes on the side of the chassis like you see in the picture shaolinwhat posted above.

The rack ears are entire replacement panels for the side plates...
I Love my V1. It has a ton of character and flexibility. It is also a lot louder than the power rating would lead you to believe. Methinks it puts out a ton more than rated on transients.
