Sounds very good to me...super tight fingerstyle sound. I remember seeing that on the Gelb website for a while, always dug the looks and now I dig the sound.

Sounds very good to me...super tight fingerstyle sound. I remember seeing that on the Gelb website for a while, always dug the looks and now I dig the sound.
Those of you the MV5 with the B string thru the body, any recommendations about which string sets will fit with that longer B? I spent 30 minutes trying B strings from different sets and was surprised at how many were too short, including most of the DR line. DR, Slinky, MTD and several others did not fit. Ended up bringing home Lakland Formula G and DA EXL 170-5SL nickels, neither of which I'm familiar with.

Ah, the thru-the-body ordeal. Only the D'Add SL's, in my experience, and I'm not a big fan of the sound. One more IME, FWIW. I've never noticed a difference in sound, tension, or playability between the two stringing options. I go with DR's and have no complaints starting the 'B' at the bridge.
Thanks Jerry. I have the original Dunlops on it now and the tension on the B is nice and firm, I'll try it on the bridge in a few days and see what I think.

I just picked up an M4V in a recent trade - it's black with a reverse P in the neck position and the OBP-1 pre. It has a couple dings, a broken bass knob (the pot's fine), and will do well with a setup, but I'm already really excited. I work close to Mike's shop, so I'm planning to take it right to source for the setup. Here's a pic taken by the previous owner (not my rig):

My new beast. Took it to rehearsal last night and it did what I asked of it. Playability is excellent (actually raised the action a bit - the thing will play very low). The passive pups are certainly lower level than the piezo setup in my RAs but the go from a nice P to a more cutting/honk J. 8.2lbs. Me like.

I was in the studio today doing drum mixes and I had my bass on me, so I plugged it in and messed around while I still had the drums up in pro tools. This bass records very nicely - I had it in passive mode with the tone all the way up and both pickups on full. There's a smidge of EQ and some light compression as well.

I'm waiting on one of these, passive, in LPB; ordered a couple of months ago. How do you like the reverse P?
So far, I dig it. I don't have a standard P at hand to A-B test it against, but it has a nice warm punch to it and seems well-balanced with the J. Without the knobs, the treb/bass is a little hard to play around with, so I'll be testing it out more after I take it to Mike.

Some fun background on this bass: SN 278, built in '99. It was originally a pretty standard passive J bass with a rather ostentatious sparkle-purple paint job (you can see it in a couple deep nicks in the belly carve-out). Two or three years ago, a previous owner brought it in for a refin to black and added the OBP-1 and the reverse-P.
A question that arose from this little history lesson: since it's pre-Plek, I get a discount on a Plek job, but I declined at this point, mainly because I'm already out $200 with some electronics work at the setup. Is the Plek really necessary on Mike's older stuff? Not to be cynical at all, but I can imagine that his (by hand) fret/neck work was a bit more precise back then, since nowadays he knows the Plek is part of the process.

Does the bass set up as low as you'd like without any issues? If so, I'd say there's no need to have it Plek'd. If not, and assuming the bass is a keeper, I'd probably make the investment.
Should have mentioned that I'm getting it back early this week, so I don't know yet on the setup. I'm figuring it's a keeper at this point, but I'll definitely be putting it through its paces before passing judgment.
