Here's my passive Lull V4. I picked it up here in the classifieds about 3 weeks ago. Its already proven itself on 4 gigs and a handful of rehearsals. I'm really enjoying the combo of the lull into my VT bass pedal and then into this Aguilar rig. This ones super easy on the shoulders at 8 lbs on the mark.

wow , that bass sounds nice , one of Mikes P4 basses are next for me , great stuff !I've never even been interested in P-Basses before, nor do I really like 5 strings, but I came across this Lull P Bass and had to check it out. This bass has made a believer out of me, I love these Lull basses and I would have never known it was 35" scale unless somebody told me.
I have this one in my possession for a while right now, not sure if I'm going to hold on to it as I don't really have a need for a 5 string, but I would love to get a 4 string version and/or a 4 string Lull Jazz bass.

Yeah that bass sounds great, I would have kept it if I was doing a lot of studio work or something - but I don't, so I didn't!
I had the opportunity to check that bass out for a few weeks and was really close to keeping it but I'm a 4 string player myself.

There is a P4 for sell at BassNW that looks nice but I'm looking for a 4 string jazz myself...
What does Lull use for a "standard" string spacing on his M5V basses with Hipshot A bridge?

Okay Lull Club, what better place to come for some insight about a fairly urgent purchase decision. I have recently become interested in getting a jazz style bass. I have never owned one as my usual taste has run to a more modern sound in order to cut through all that stage noise and get some growl. I just had an opportunity to play a lightly used Lull M5V although at a very low volume. I was just knocked out by the playability of the neck but I didn't really get to run the thing through it's paces. After having spent a lot of money over the years buying awesome looking and highly praised basses I have finally learned that I just won't bond with an instrument and it will just sit in it's case unless I love the neck. I've tried to expand my tolerance by consciously buying different styles. Doesn't work for me. This bass certainly passed the neck and playability tests... It immediately felt as comfortable as my Roscoe and my Warrior. This M5V is beautiful to look at as well and with a more traditional tone might really round out my trio of instruments. I won't have an opportunity to see this bass again as it is now 400 miles away so how 'bout a little info?
1. Are Lull necks usually about the same or did I just happen to stumble on one that suits me perfectly?
2. Anything I should know or consider about the tone or other nuances of these instruments?
3. This bass is at a reputable dealer so I know I might pay a little more than buying it from an individual. Is $2000 a reasonable price for this as it is used ( though by appearance could pass as brand new?)
Any comments would be appreciated.

All of them I've owned or tried were the same. They are super fast feeling necks! Just perfect for me for the 5-string models.
I really liked the M5Vs owned. The tone was really amazing. The way I'd describe it is much more vintage fender like tone, but imagine it on a 35" scale bass. It's a bit more focused. I really like what it does for the B string, but I'm not a fan of 35" scale for the higher register strings. Just my preference.
I spent an hour or so at Bass Northwest with my M5V and a Sadowsky, both ash/maple and both sounded excellent. The Sadowsky was bigger and thicker sounding, while the Lull was more focused down low. I much preferred the Lull B string for it's clarity and extremely low action without buzz. I prefer 4 string basses these days, but would love to have another Lull 5er around when I can afford it.
Also, I have to say that I preferred my 2010 Fender Am DLX with Nordstrands for my tonal goals (maybe due to scale length?). It had a bigger, rounder bottom end than the Lull M5V, which is what I like.
It's worth whatever you'd like to pay for it and these basses really deserve a larger number of followers, IMO. To be honest, used M5Vs go pretty cheap. You can usually find them for around 1500-1700 here or on ebay. I've picked them up with AAAAA quilted tops for just about 1500 shipped, though it did show plenty of signs of wear, and that was from a dealer. I gladly would've paid more, FWIW.

Plus, it's one of those really special basses that just about plays itself - the action is THIS low, and it's the lightest bass in my arsenal (except for the Rob Allen, but that's a different animal entirely). It's literally one of those instruments that makes me ask myself why I have so many others.
Covered a lot of ground on this gig - small group jazz, big band, and lots of R&B and disco. Ran through the trusty Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 and the incredible Bergantino AE212. Here are some clips...

That rig looks stunning! I totally agree that these basses have some of the best action I've ever put my hands on, especially for jazz basses. I haven't come across another bass that comes close since. And those clips sound great! You play the same music that I do, so it's great to hear it in the same setting. Thanks for sharing!
mglabrie, I can't comment on necks or tone as a lot has changed since he made mine. I love it, but $2000 used seems a bit steep.
I need to try one of Mikes 5 strings at NAMM , i am the proud owner of my modern Mike Vintage 4 stringer , I love the bass more every time I play it , it by far is the most comfortable bass ive ever had my hands on , MV4 , the lindy bart thing is a amazing combo with the light bass and the beautiful wood , I ams sure the 5's are every bit as sweet , I also dig the P bass , I played his at his shop , hope one of those are at NAMM too , I don't think a guy could go wrong with any of their basses .
Last time I was at his shop he mentioned that they were tossing around the idea of a 34" 5 string. Call and request and it may come true.
