The big brown truck delivered this today: PJ5 Alder/Rosewood. She has a 2-band Bartolini pre under the hood and a passive tone control. Sounds huge!

Thanks guys. Yup, it's lake placid blue. The pics make it look lighter than the actual color. I will try to take some pics without the flash. Its a bit darker/greener than those pics show. Im usually a trans finish guy, but i love LPB!
The controls are stacked vol/vol, VTC (pull for passive), stacked treble/bass.
Wish it had a mid range control, but it sounds great anyway!

I'd imagine the mid control being a minor thing with a P bass though, they tend to be mid aggressive pre-eq.

It does seem pretty versatile without it, and yes, a bit mid-forward. I'm just a control freak!
...well I like my M5V a lot (SD+NTMB) I also have Marcus V (OBP3 and Schaller 2000 bridge upgraded). I love my Marcus V ...well M5V is better in some ways but there is not Marcus sound which I like...M5V is more punchy more transparent, more deep, better low B, but there is not that "Marcus flavor"...I don't need two identical basses but it would be nice to be little closer to Marcus sound on my M5V. So is the OBP-1 + SD pickups recipe for Marcus "soup"?...thank you W.
what about DiMarzio Area's as upgrade for Lull's basses?

That's a classic piece of awesome. Good luck with the new pre. I have the aggie in my fretless, but I could imagine it's pretty heavy handed on a fretted.
I was Lull-less for some time now. But recently got an Oly.White (matching headstock) M5V in a fair "roadworn" condition. Apparently, it's likely to be built in 2001. I'm trying to get more info about it now. Some pics:
I recently offloaded my Nordy VJ5 P/J bass because I felt that my Lull just killed it in terms of feel and tone. No doubt, the Nordy is a beautiful bass and feels killer but my Lulls are just magical. I've got a passive P/J 5 and active P/J 4 with a Fralin neck pickup. Theres something lively about them that I can explain.
I'm using Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats since i wanted an "old school" sound. DR Lo-Riders also work well.
I'm a big fan of the Lo-Riders on my other basses, but haven't tried them on the PJ5 yet. I am also not looking for a real thumpy tone. I ordered a set of Supersteels to see if the tension is close to the Lo-0Riders. Could be a lower-cost alternative to the DR's. We'll see!
I love Sunbeams on these basses - just seems like the perfect fit. Not long enough for thru-body, if that's important to you, but that's the only downside I've found.

Though it was about time to join this club as I'm the proud owner of 2 of Mike's M5V's. What perhaps makes it a bit
unusual is that I'm living in Denmark which to some will be recognised as a small european contry. Lull is still fairly unknown in Europe, and to own 2 of his basses in small country like this is certainly very unusual, if not the only one.
Right, the instruments
The Beast. sn. 479 Burgundy Mist Alder body with maple/rosewood neck, Duncan PU's and Aguilar pre-amp
The Beauty: sn. 964 swamp ash body, maple neck with bird eye maple fretboard, Duncan PU's and Bartolini pre-amp.
So how did I end up with these 2 diamonds? Bass Player magazine did a test of 21 5 string basses about 10 years ago in which one of Mike's instruments was represented. The review didn't perhaps do them the justice they deserve, but a couple of years later BassNW had the quilted maple bass for sale, and as I've always wanted an instrument it this particular finish, I took a chance and ordered it. Not cheap when you live in a country that add 28% in tax on all US imported goods, but upon first look at it when I opened the box I knew this was a keeper.
A couple of years later, the Burgundy showed up as a 2nd. hand sale locally but a friend of mine grapped it in front of me. However he's the type of person who changes instruments almost monthly, and a while later it was mine. Took a bit of time to talk him into selling it, and I'm sure that if he could get any chance of buying it back he would act in a split second.
So how do the sound.
The Beauty: Clean a whistle simply said. You hear every timbre of the body and neck wood, with a nice edge to the sound.
The Beast: Biggest, fattest, and most coherent well balanced Jazz bass I have ever heard. Truely love this bass. String it with D'Addario ECB81 flatwounds and it becomes the easiest played crowd pleaser man can think of.
It seems that Mike Lull's instruments are finally getting the recognition they should have. The rest of us can only enjoy we have known this for years.
