Thanks. I'm looking forward to it. I used to have an Access Stage 3 double bag, which, for the price, was a helluva buy. I had a zipper malfunction with the first one I had and Access replaced the bag no questions asked. However, when I got my Lulls, they wouldn't come close to fitting in that bag. My P5 will fit in my Contego, but it's so snug, that I get a little nervous. The J5, with it's wider lower bout didn't have a chance. I've been using a Lull branded "standard" Protec gig bag for the J, but it just doesn't afford any protection at all.

How would you compare the M80 to the contego in terms of protection? Obviously the quality will be higher (better be for 2-3x the price.) If I really like it, I might try to find an electric guitar model for my RA mouse.

I should have my very first Mike Lull bass before the end of the month. I ordered a Lull V4 back in April... Swamp Ash body with clear gloss finish, black pick guard, maple fretboard. The only extra customization I made was that I ordered a quarter-sawn maple neck instead of their standard flat-sawn maple neck.
I find it very interesting that so few people order 4-string Lull basses, in comparison to the large number of 5-string Lull basses. It also seems like even fewer people order passive Lull basses, in comparison to active Lull basses. I'm a 4-string player all the way, and I love the tone and simplicity of a passive jazz bass. So I went with the V4, rather than the M4V. I would have expected to see more passive 4-string Lull jazz and precision basses, but I guess they're not quite as common. Can't wait to get mine though!

I think you'll find that most people have the active/passive option on their MV4/5. My PJ5 is passive, and it was the ONE that made me fall in love with Lull basses.

Regarding the 5-strings, have you played one? The four's are really nice, but in my opinion no one makes a 5-string neck quite like Mike's (that I've played.) It's far more comfortable than the Fender and Sadowsky necks, somewhat similar to the Lakland necks, but the finish and fretwork is better than the Skylines and most of the USA Lakland's I've played.

If I could afford it I would have an MV4 and a P4 in addition to my fivers. The T-bird has never been my thing, but I would really love to play one sometime.

oh, great, Kai, now you got me re-GASing for a Lull fiver! I too am interested by that T-bird thing. Only thing that came close to it was the P4 with the T pup that I played at Mesa Boogie Hollywood. That was a treat. I can only dream what two T pups is like. Maybe a fiver!

BTW, How many are using compression on their Lull basses? I have found that mine are incredibly even from string to string, that I hardly ever use much if any... primarily just a bit to tame the big low end.


Also, my Mono Dual M80 arrived, and I think that it's gonna work out. It fits my basses perfectly and is astoundingly light. I loaded it up and it carries much better than my old Access Stage 3 double bag did.

The Contego is stiffer on the sides, but the Mono is really well padded. I actually think the Contego has more storage and better protection. The Mono is really well made, but honestly, not worth the price difference when compared to the Contego IMHO. Both are nice, but I would have stuck with the Contego if mu Lulls fit.

Thinking about getting a Lull P5 - love the available finishes and the 35" scale for the 5.

I saw on the price list they offer a case for $250, which is more than I probably want to pay for a case. Anyone have any experience with other hardshell cases that would fit this bass?

Also, I understand I can order direct but the discount isn't as much as going through a dealer. Are there any advantages or disadvantages of custom ordering through a dealer? I'm inclined to just go direct unless there's a compelling reason to not do so.

Well, you already nailed the obvious one. Direct pricing reflects dealer protection. There are a number of terrific dealers on-board...including Rocket...and they can also add value in terms of advice and quicker service, along with price.

I'm willing to bet that going through a dealer might be quicker - but not sure how they prioritize. No down side to going through a good dealer though, and often you can get deals on other stuff as a side benefit to the purchase. I like to support good independent shops.
