Guys, just got my first Mike Lull!!! Bought it used from a great guy near Buffalo, NY. The whole purchase was a pleasure and when I got it...WOW! It's an older M5V but looks and plays like new. I'm completely sold on Mike's work. What a piece of great playing art!!!

Threw on a set of Chromes yesterday as I was not digging the stock Dunlops. Went for a 40-100 set as I don't like the heavy tension of the 50-105 (is it me are are Chromes quite high in string tension?). The mids now come sparkling through where I found they seemed to be a bit too mellow with the SSs. Thinking about trying some TIs and Labellas too.
I don't seem to understand this... I'm quite a heavy player as a double bassist.. I've never popped a string out even once on my M5. I bend, pull, pop, and just about anything else you can do to abuse strings. Never had the issue. Maybe try filing your nut down a little bit to get rid of the issue. Also, i've yet to go out of tune aside from just a movement issue.
Actually a good story for Mike's Basses and Durability.
I flew to Bali, Indonesia Via San Francisco earlier this year. Cathay Pacific Airlines REFUSED to allow me to Carry my axe on the plane (even though I knew that it would fit inside the overheads of a 747-400). So sadly my baby had to go underneath in a Reunion Blues gig bag. After 2 more international flights (SF - Hong Kong and Hong Kong - Bali). My baby came out of the luggage area, I opened it up and the sucker was fully intact, maybe out of tune a quarter step.
My level of admiration for Lulls Increased from its already 95% - 195%

Yeah, the option is quite pricey as compared to a few other builders... Nordstrand, for example, offers blocks AND binding for only $300.
BUT...
This is bass is set to be "the one" and I promised myself that I can't cut any corners.
IF for some horrible reason I decide differently by the time I order it, then I will probably go "marker free" as you did with The Dreamsicle.
To be honest with you, I actually popped the E string out of the nut slot during one of my more ridiculous moments, and, well... I'd rather not have that happen again.
Granted... it MIGHT never happen again, but... it wasn't exactly fun when it happened the first time.
I'm going to bring it up with Mike when I talk to him to see what he says... but, I have seen a screenshot of Mike Smith's bass (Rhianna) from Mike Lull's Facebook, and you'll notice that he has requested the same thing.

I've also noticed that my other basses that have had a retainer to keep compression on the nut stay in tune a lot better... but, that might just be in my head.
Also... is it just me, or is that headstock "different" somehow? Or is it the odd perspective? I dunno... but I like it!
In a "Too Loud Hendrixy-Style Super-Heavy Psychedelic Blues Jam" we were playing one evening, I sharply bent from F# (2nd fret on the E) to like... I dunno... A or something ridiculous.
When I did this, I literally used the strength in my three strongest fingers and curled my wrist at an awkward angle and then, POP! The E string was out.
It was definitely not under any normal circumstances, and, frankly, it has not happened again... I've also never needed a battery on a gig (knock on wood) but I bring a couple every time I leave the house.
I was just trying to be safe.

It's not just you... I put a set of Chromes on my Lakland Joe 5 and I thought the neck was going to snap in half.
I think I had to give the truss rod a full 3/4 turn in order to compensate... it was ridiculous.
I'd love to try some TI flats... I've heard so many great things. I've never been willing to drop the dough on them without being sure I would love them, but I think I might have to do that soon.
TI's are very comfy strings to me, I do not find them floppy at all, but I have heard that is the primary complaint. Up to now I've only had them on 4-strings. Just bought a pair for a 5-string, but I haven't installed them yet. This was a somewhat risky move, because its a 34" scale 5-string. But if I don't like them, I can always use the other 4 on one of my 4's.
I highly recommend the Sadowky flats, XL if you're going to put them on a Lull 5-er. I have turned a few former flats-haters around with these on my Lull PJ5.

Now, are they steel or nickel (I take it you mean the Black Labels)? Sure I can get a set from somewhere...
Steel, Black Label are the only Sadowsky flatwounds for bass. I prefer them to Labellas, but they have a similar feel; higher tension than TI's. You can read a lot of reviews about them in the Strings forum.
Maybe your M5's got a newer type of the headstock? My previous P5 and my current M5V have that "old" shape: both have their G string with "cumbersome" angle on its way from the nut to the string post. I had problems with string popping out of the nut with my previous Lull. I somehow managed them with additional wraps on the post. But I will definitely put a new (hipshot?) retainer once such thing happens with my current Lull.

you know, i love this site, i really do. but....i hate the gas it gives me!! these lull basses are incredible! maybe i should trade off my stingray now! lol
