When I did this, I literally used the strength in my three strongest fingers and curled my wrist at an awkward angle and then, POP! The E string was out.

It was definitely not under any normal circumstances, and, frankly, it has not happened again... I've also never needed a battery on a gig (knock on wood) but I bring a couple every time I leave the house.

I was just trying to be safe.

Maybe your M5's got a newer type of the headstock? My previous P5 and my current M5V have that "old" shape: both have their G string with "cumbersome" angle on its way from the nut to the string post. I had problems with string popping out of the nut with my previous Lull. I somehow managed them with additional wraps on the post. But I will definitely put a new (hipshot?) retainer once such thing happens with my current Lull.



Nice bass! Maybe you should contact Mike Lull to try to get the original set?

I'm not sure if i have the old one or new one.. Here's a photo .. you tell me. My bass was built in February of 2007 Ser. 1235 (Paul also told me that it was one of the NAMM showpieces)

Well I did it. After about a year threatening to do so, I ordered a M4V. Dropped the down last week and in 12 to 16 weeks I should have it. Maybe closer to 16 because of a few options I want. Thanks for the knowledge shared folks.:D

I don't have an MV5, but I used to use flats on my Sadowsky 24-5 and EB/MM SR5 fretless. I had both TIs and Sadowsky flats light gauge. I like light tension, so I enjoyed the TIs (and have used them on and off for many years in other basses), but the B-string had too much overtones and little definition. Maybe it will be better on a 35"-scale bass. Same with the Sadowsky flats: great strings, a bit more tension than the TIs, but still very playable and easy on the fingers, but the B-string wasn't defined.

So, I gave up using flats on 5-strings, but I haven't tried any other brands or gauges. The Sadowsky flats are top notch, besides the B-string. Maybe try the standard gauge?

I actually just ordered some TI flats for a '75 P-Bass I just acquired... I should have them today. I'm excited to check it out.

It's funny, because I had the SAME exact experience as you with 5-string flats. When I received my Lakland Joe Osborn 5'er, it came with the Lakland Joe Osborn "Signature" flats... I believe all Lakland roundwound strings are made by GHS, so I'm assuming the flats are too.

Anyway, I put them on and they felt ok... I loooooved the throaty low-end "punch" E through G had, but the B just sounded like a big fat dead string with no punch or definition. I called Brian at Lakland and he sent me three replacements... same thing with all of them.

After that, I just took them off and threw them out... I wanted to try them again later so I got Chromes, and that was an even worse experience... so I just gave up.

Oh, and congrats on the Lull!!!

So, can I join the group and get a number? My Lull Ultra Vintage P is one amazing bass, it weighs 7.2 lbs and has a Jazz neck profile. I did not care for their shade of Sherwood Green as much as some others so I found the color of Sherwood that I was going for and they pulled it off.

Mike Lull and Paul Schuster are two of the coolest cats out there. They really worked with me to get me the lightest bass possible. I had a car accident last October and have some major neck issues, no more boat anchor basses or guitars for me any more.

I have two Lull basses the UVP4 #1706 in Sherwood Green and a P5 #834 in Seafoam Green, my two favorite basses.

Here are some pics of Mike with my UVP right after it was done.

My camera crapped out on me, when I get my hands on one I will post some pics of the pair together.
