I am leaning towards rosewood...mahogany is vert hit and miss for weight. I know with swamp ash the bass will be lite weight.

That can be a bit dangerous. My ash M5V P/J is quite a bit heavier than my alder J. At my local store right now, the heaviest Lull in stock is an ash/maple M5V. Ypu can certainly get very light swamp ash, but IME the real hit or miss is whether the bass made from it spunds good.

I just got a brand new Lull V4, which is the passive jazz bass. I'm considering having it converted into an M4V, which of course is the active jazz bass. What are your thoughts on that? Do you think it would be worth it?

It would only be worth it if you find you have to do a lot of on the fly adjustments at the bass. Otherwise, get a great outboard eq. Check out a xotic tri-logic or something similar. That would give you a second channel to work with. Cheaper than handing it back to Mike as well.

My UV4 is Swamp Ash, the bass weighs 7.2 lbs! Mike and Paul knew about the situation with my neck and they were really good about making the bass very lite weight.

The tone of my V4 is amazing, it kills my USA Lakland Duck Dunn which is an amazing bass too. That bass is alder and came in right around 8 lbs, I custom ordered that one before the Hanson buy out.

From the discussions I had with Mike, Swamp Ash is actually a wood that is light weight and still has good rich tone. The old myth of the heavier the bass the better the tone is so not true. I have had basses that weigh 12+ lbs and had ZERO life.

Builders only have very educated guesses to what wood combos and weights are going to sound like. It can be a surprise after the first tuning.

I am with you on that one, my Lulls got more play time than anything else after they arrived.

Not to say my other basses are not good basses. The Lulls are not as heavy and IMHO have better bottom end, again my opinion.

2007 M5V (Duncans/OP3). Fabulous instrument, what a player! Extremely light weight, so i'm guessing it's the swamp ash body. Sound's fantastic with the LABgruppen/AE410-combination.
Only bad thing is it doesn't fit my flight case, and i got a couple of fly dates coming up. Any ideas on long flight cases?

Ale...I love your bass! Totally the quntessential Lull, IMO. Classic styling and absolute wheelhouse specs. I'm willing to bet Mike didn't want to let it leave the shop. I can only imagine how great it sounds.

Thanks man! Got it today and will bring it to two gig's tomorrow, first a gospel gig than straight ahead jazz gig. I'm sure it will deliver. Still getting used to the 35', but i'm sure it won't be a problem.

The SKB bass safe has always interested me, but i'm kinda looking for ATA cases with that extra length. Would a double mooradian (with just one bass) fit the bass safe?

I don't think so. BTW very nice bass, looks just like my Rosewood M5V that is also very light.
