I have plans to buy either a P5 or PJ5 Lull in the next few months. I really like the alder/maple fb combo, so I'll be looking at the various Lull dealers and the TB classifieds for one with this combo when I have the funds saved up.

The Mike Lull Club Part 2

This one is a U.S. handbuilt Mike Lull PT4 4 string model that features a lightweight (7.7 lbs.) highly resonant Alder body with a gorgeous Black high gloss finish, Black pickguard and an optional matching headstock finish color. The 34" scale graphite reinforced "J" type (1.5" nut width) Maple bolt-on neck has a 21 fret Rosewood fingerboard and an incredibly sleek fast feel. The pickups are the passive custom wound Mike Lull "T-Bass" type and they sound as good if not better than any original Gibson Thunderbird Bass pickup from the 1960's. So, this bass will give you the sound of a classic vintage Thunderbird Bass with the appearance of a Precision Bass.
Anyone looking for a P style bass is really missing out if they don't try Mike's. Best P pup i've ever played. So expressive. It'll go where you tell it to. You are more likely to find your individual sound than an "instrument type" sound... if that makes sense. His bridge J is perfectly matched as well. LOVE this bass.

I actually jokingly said to Mike that I was going to start bugging him about a hollowbody the other day. He laughed and said I would be waiting a VERY long time. I think he was referring to hell freezing over! Who wants to gang up on him with me? Jerry and I need to keep on him about a 6er as well. Wait... I want a 6er HB.
Yeah Im torn between a straight up P5 and PJ5.Tougher choice than I first thought.Historically Im a Jazz Bass guy-my current Jazz is also Alder/Maple which I love.Id love to try both,but that would be tough to do.
When in doubt, I say go for a P/J. Why not have the J back there for versatility.... ESPECIALLY if you're a jazz guy. On the other hand, you may already have that covered. Like I said earlier, Mike's P/J set is wonderfully balanced. I love my Alder/maple fender jazz (which Mike PLEK'd), but I have to say the P pup with ash body grrrowls on my lull. It's a hard choice because at first I wanted an alder body, but Mike and I settled on ash.

And honestly I agree with all 3 of you.On top of that I like the look of a PJ more than a P as well.At some point I love to have just a good old fashion P.But especially on my main gig versatility is key-the PJ would definitely help.
Its funny,I started playing bass in 28 years ago on a P-Bass.I played it for a few years and havent used one since.But over probably the last year or so,every time I go into a music store I pick up a P and think-I really need to get one of these again.Funny how things come back around.

I can't say enough about my ash/maple P/J. As Paulie said, the balance is fantastic. No loss of volume, regardless of how much fun I have with the blend knob. Biased in either direction, the sound is as you'd imagine..it's awesome to cover that much sonic ground. However, I am just totally knocked out by the sound with the knob centered. Thick, full, fat, grindy...truly the best of both worlds.
I was in Bass NW on Wednesday and played that bass. It kills! Took a bass of mine in to sell hoping it would before someone snatched this Lull up. Looks like you beat me to the punch. Guess I'll be ordering a new one. Enjoy!
