Paulie -- sounds great! Pretty much exactly like my Alder/RW PJ5 with a little brighter wood combo. The added flexibility of the preamp must be nice (but I honestly don't miss it.) Mike builds great instruments. The Lull PJ5 is just the best all-around tone my hands and ears have ever come across!

I wish I could afford 5 Lull basses. ;)

Just picked up a Lull 5 string P/J from a fellow TBer. I think this one has been through a few hands, I found an old ad on the Low End website. It's sunburst finish, ash body, maple fingerboard. I believe Aguilar per-amp with passive tone control and maybe Basslines pickups. So far so good. I'm going to check out some at NAMM and try to get a taste of the different pickup and preamp combos. The bass has super snappy acoustic tone.

Guys.... A TBer i trust pointed me to Mike Lull for my j bass quest. Very little out there in terms of reviews, etc. what is the difference between a V4 and MV4? Looking used ones of each. Also, im leaning passive so what is the active thing all about on the mike lulls? If anyone has one you are thinking about off'ing, let me know. Im mostly searching for a lakland joe osborn but may take a diversion into mike lull territory for a while. Thx.

Mike uses V & M to indicate "vintage" and "modern". The V basses (VX & UVX) are usually passive, and the UV has a full size body. The V is either full size or 7/8 size, I forget which. The M's are 7/8 size bodies and active. The V and the M also partially indicate the number of frets. The UVX's have 20, VX's have 21, MXV's have 21, and MX's have 24.

The MXV is the hybrid of the bunch, it's got a foot in both the modern and the vintage realms. It's got 21 frets & the 7/8 body size, and it's usually active.

We're only about 4-5 hours from Knoxville, and I have a V4 and an M4V in stock if you'd like to try them out in person before you start your search for a used one.

I've owned several nice/boutique jazz basses, e.g. Sadowsky, USA Lakland JO, and several M4Vs. I've played almost everything.

They are all so nice, and it really just comes down to personal preference. I guess that doesn't help much, unless you're at NAMM.

What I like about Lulls:

*Superb Action/playability. They beat Sadowsky/Lakland here, IME/IMO.
*Quality construction, very much on par with Sadowky and Lakland
*Weight (varies per bass, but Mike's are usually very light)
*Service (Mike/Roger are super cool and accessible)
*Built in USA
*Great vintage sound
*Unsurpassed value/affordability

My Lakland JO was very nice, but I prefer a downsized body and a slightly beefier neck than the JO's. Most JOs are usually quite heavy IME. Great vintage, passive tone.

Personally, I ike have a nice Bartolini/Aguilar two band preamp. With Mike's basses, you can always switch to passive, so I see no downside other than the $150 upcharge. For me, this is money really well spent. I don't feel like the active setup affects the tone much, and it's sooo handy to roll off lows in a boomy room on the fly, etc.

I have chromes on my fretless and really like them. This is what Mike says he prefers. A lot of guys around here give love to the Sadowskys which are made by labella. I had flats on my pj5 but I'm not a fan of flat B strings on fretted basses. How are you liking the TI's?
