I posted an NBD the other day but just realized I didn't share in the Lull Club. Here's my new Mike Lull V4. Ash w/ Mary Kaye finish, ebony fingerboard, gold acrylic plate with Lull's handwound J pickups & passive electronics. It is tasty!!

Any idea what the difference is between the new and older pickups (besides the raised poles)?

The older standard jazz pickup is a collaboration with Seymour Duncan and Mike Lull. This new pickup is made by the folks at Lull exclusively.
Here's my text with Spencer. It pretty much explains what they were going for.
Interesting, on my invoice the pickups are listed as Lull/Duncan. At any rate - whatever they are, they sound great.
I've had 2 basses with the Lull/Duncan Jazz pickups. They're excellent. They sound great with active electronics. This is my first passive Lull & these pickups sound great too.
Naturally, I'm inquiring whether a 5-string version of the Lull Jazz pickup will be available.
The answer is "forthcoming "….
(Edit: I should add, I love, love, love my single-coil Fralins that are currently in my Lull. But I'm always curious about anything new from Spencer)

The default Lull 4 string Jazz and Precision pickups are Fralins. The 5 string pickups are Duncans.

Extremely happy with these Lull's…
P4/P5 have hand-wound Lull pickups. The P5 has a mint pg, but it often looks like parchment in pics. Obviously, the PT5 has Lull's custom T-bird pup. I have two more builds in progress:
•PJ4 alder/ebony unlined fretless (Fralin's)
•V5 alder/ebony (Lull JJ pups)
I've now sold off all my other custom builds (Sadowsky NYC's, Fbass's, and all except one 30" scale MTD)…. lol, I didn't start out planning to upend my stable…it evolved. Over the past year+, began to realize I kept reaching for a Lull to play…or another Lull, etc. Can't keep 'em all, as the saying goes…life's too short (and too costly : )) To be clear, absolutely NO diss meant to the other brands!
Lull neck's really appeal to me…Spencer's basses just play "left-hand" easier (imo/ymmv)…. For year's, it's been a priority to have 1-3/4" nut width and 19mm bridge 5's. Spencer happily accommodated my preferred nut width, and suggested using A-bridges, then setting them up as wide as possible (of course, still playable)…. After getting my first Lull (P5) above, I was hooked—super comfortable, 18mm 5'er necks (with a couple of tweaks)…
Suffice to say, I'm very pleased growing a rack full of (5) Lull's—they're truly what I reach for/enjoy playing!
(I'll always keep a Fender P4/J4 Player series around to mod/mess with…someone told me many year's ago, that e-v-e-r-y bass player needs an inexpensive Fender bass in their rack…check. ; ))

I'm obsessed with MTD's 30" stuff. There's one for sale at Fretspot right now. Maybe someday…
Quite awhile ago, Mike (and Daniel) built me a one-off Andrew Gouche sig 430-24 that's very special to me. Mike called it an AG Jr…it's not going anywhere. : )
They're all really nice, but that one on the left looks extra amazing.
I'm seriously considering selling a bunch of my basses and picking up a Lull J5.
I see a Stingray in the classifieds in the near future.
You might have been right about that.
My SR5 is an HH that I converted to an H model. I also replaced the tuners with Hipshot ULs. I may undo the mods, give it a good setup and list it. The Lull P5 is giving me the goods.

Hey everyone. I am a bass art lover! I collect beautiful basses and hope I can play them one day. I am starting to get more into it and I noticed that my B string doesn't sound good after the 12th fret. I recently got a beautiful Overwater bass but I have not been able to get the intonation right with the B and E string. I've heard that Mike Lull 35" scale B string sounds great. I am interested in a 5 string PJ. Anyone have any experience they are willing to share?

Does any B string sound « good » above the 12th fret? I'd say you're doing well if your B sounds « acceptable given the circumstances » in that zone.
