I have played both but I'm bassist first.

This 2006 Mike Lull P5 recently became mine.
I traded my Alembic that I only had for a couple of months, but although it was a great looking -and playing bass, it seriously lacked bottom end.


Plenty of low end I have now:
Aguilar OBP-2 Pre-amp / Custom Shop Seymour Duncan Basslines (made to Mike's specs) / Lightweight Alder body and a (at least in Europe) very hard to come by beautiful Brazilian Rosewood fretboard.

Time will tell if this is a keeper, but for now I am very pleased with it.

Fantastic bass.

Just a note: because of the Brazilian rosewood your bass is at risk of being confiscated if you take it across an international border.

I've read about CITES, and although it would surprise me if they would intercept and confiscate my bass, I guess I'd better pass on Mike's offer shipping the bass to the US for getting a PLEK treatment.
Better save than sorry.

Question for you Lull 5-string owners:
I bought a new set of D'Addario EXL170-5, but the B-string through body did not work, as the B-string is not flexible enough to take the "corner/cut" at the bridge.
What brand/type strings would work?

Madmic try DR HI-BEAMS I'm running 45-125 no issue with string through the back.

Before you give up on the EXLs, you might try a .125 B. That's what I have on my M5V. Works fine. Be sure to get Super Long Scale, though.

BUT .... there's nothing wrong at all with TonyP's idea either. I've used DRs before, and I was happy with them.

Just ordered ProSteels set starting at .40 with .125 B. Bridge is being replaced by Lull due to some rare issue and they are going to do a setup with these. Can't wait

Mine is passive and also gives me all the low end I will ever need. Please post some sound clips if you can-I would like to hear how they sound with the Pre.

Thanks! I'll record some sound clips shortly.
The Pre-amp will give you that extra boost that I don't really need at home but is perfect for gigging with my Rock cover-band.

I was wondering if the spacing between strings on Mike's basses was more equidistant than on my Lakland 55-94.
I'd appreciate hearing from someone who has played both Lull's and Lakland's . The spacing between the E and B strings is tighter on a Lakland when compared to the G/D, D/A, and A/E spacing.

I never knew that about Laklands, and I owned a bunch. Since hipshot makes the bridges Mike uses in all of his basses, I think they are very equidistant.

Speaking of that, I can't believe how prices have gone up.

Prices for which basses? Fenders or Mike's?

Mike's. About 10 years ago, I goy a P4. Significant price increase, great bass.

A couple of models like the M5V did go up this spring that is true.

I will say this...To give it a little justification, IMHO they do play better then anything any other bolt on Fender style out there.
