I called out to the Lull shop today to discuss the frets (Greg suggested that I call them about it). They said "no problem".
I know Mike uses custom wound Seymour Duncan's in the M5V. Does anybody know what production model 4 string pickup would be closest?
I'm absolutely loving the tone of my M5V and want to make my M4V as close as I can to it. That means a set a JJ's rather than the PJ set in there now and a new preamp (maybe. I'll start with the pickups first).

He uses Fralins on the 4 string models. Why not just ask him? If you tell him what you're looking for, he'll probable know exactly what to do.
Right, but I'm looking for Duncan's that are similar to mine in the M5V.

They are custom wound. All I'm wondering if anyone knows what the closest of the shelf Duncan pickup is, if any at all, as I obviously can't buy them from Mike being that they're 5 string pickups and I want them for a 4 string.
I do not particularly want Fralins. I have them and I'm just honestly not a fan. Maybe Mikes are better as they're custom wound to his specs. I'd still rather explore the Duncan option first. I'll probably end up with a set of Sadowsky HC's or DiMarzio of some sort if I can't get them.

Anyone here know why they use Fralins in 4s and Duncans in 5s? Is there some kind of sound issue with Fralin 5s?
I personally love Fralins....but I have only had them in passive basses and they sounded wonderful! I had a lull passive PJ4 with nordys and they were a bit cleaner sounding.....my active TC4 has fat stacks and they are also cleaner but sound great! They sound to me like a PJ should sound like a more full sounding jazz.

I once had a Sadowsky Metro and couldn't get used to their proprietary HC pickups. Not sure how much of the tone was in the pre-amp but in passive mode, the pickups lacked a lot compared to the Duncans and Fralins which I feel are very comparable.
Interesting. I've got a Sadowsky NYC JJ5 and I think the pickups are very comparable to the Duncans in the Lull M5V. I've got a standard set of Fralins in my Lakland and although they sound good they do seem to lack a little compared to the others.
My M4V has a set of Aguilar PJ's right now. They sound decent, but it's tough to find a matching neck pickup for the set. I'm going to contact Aguilar to see if they sell one and I'll try that first.

The pre is going to have distinct effect as we'll.
There is touch of he modern musicial compression that you get with the Bart pre IMHO.
I would just be sure to match that as we'll if your looking for that vibe.
I don't think Aguilar sells single J pickups but if you're happy with their PJ set I would get the 4J-HC set and sell the PJ set to recoup costs.
My M4V and M5V's sound comparable however any differences may be due to the 4-string being ash/maple and 5-string alder/rosewood. Apples to apples, how do you all compare the tone of the Fralins from the Duncans?
I'd like to hang onto the PJ set so I can switch back and fourth as needed. That's why just adding the Aggie J would be the easiest option. Swap one pickup and it matches with the bridge pickup with either combo.
Mine are both ash/maple but the M4V has a PJ setup in it right now so it sounds nothing like my M5V.
