THE MOST ANNOYING INSTRUMENT

The worst instrument:
its acctually the player, for instance-
everybody has witnessed this event, you go into a music shop and you have those two people that arent testing equipment out, but are playing to show off that they can play the guitar, it makes them feel more secure to be playing an instrument in front of musicians, when acctually everybody wants them to shut the hell up for 5 minuets!!!!

I think it has to do with the way you play an instrument. Accordian, banjo, tin whistle, hand drums, all of these instruments have been made awesome by Flogging Molly, Swingin' Utters, The Pogues and Ozomatli. I think every instrument has potential, if it doesn't rock, it's probably because you don't.
Damn, I had forgotten about them, there's good Irish trad tin whistle in there somewhere. Must go listen, thanks.

In my opinion, one of the most tedious insruments has to be the ocarina - it's right up there with the "swanee whistle", and not without good reason - if you look at the waveform of these instruments, you will see that they have few (if any) transients. The human whistle is another example, although there are a few whistlers who are very good (perhaps they are careful to create transients, which make their sound interesting).

[LECTURE]
Transients (the beginning of a note or sound) play an important part in giving any instrument its unique character - this can be demonstrated by recording (for example) a clarinet and a flute playing the same note, but fading them up on playback, so that you don't hear the beginning of the note. You'll be surprised as to how similar they sound…

Yep. Then again, I've never heard it played well. It's a traditional instrument here, and it's one most kids seem too pick up, mess around with for a few weeks, then decide they hate the thing. I've never heard it played by anyone who's been whistling for much longer than a few months.

Hmm, i beg to differ. I know im from the north, but when we wer on holiday in donegal, we went down to a pub, and there were guys there with fiddle's, violins, acoustic guitars and tin whistles. It seemed like it was a completly open jam session in the middle of a pub, a few germans came in, one left, and came back ten minutes later with a whistle, and started playing with them.

It was definately one of the best live music performances i have ever seen, even though it was with out bass.

That's what I mean, I've never heard it played by someone who actually knows what they're doing. I went and listened to my Pogues cds a while ago, and have since changed my mind, good tin whistle playing = good music. Same with violin, professional solo violin is one of the most beautiful sounds you can hear, but it's one of the most horrible instruments in the hands of a complete newbie. Same with anything I suppose.

Any instrument is annoying if it's played badly; no instrument is annoying if it's played well.
That's what I meant.

The drums... the worst is when you are trying to have a conversation with your guitarist during rehearsal, and then the drummer starts playing his drums as loud as he can..... end of conversation. :)

Yeh sorry i read your post wrong. For some reason i thought you were saying that there are no 'seasoned' players out there.
My mistake :hiding:

Isnt it annoying when anyone starts playing loudly while your trying to talk.

Any instrument annoys me when played along with a cd, unless im the one doing the playing, i dont know why...

I think all instruments are great, if used in the right place. one of my band's songs (we felt) needed banjo, so we called on a friend of the band to play with us. the song sounds great with banjo....on our cd, the same song has accordion for the last minute or so. accordion chords are just huge-sounding.

and it's my accordion B+)

For as long as this thread as gone on, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the recorder yet!

Especially if you've ever been in a beginner music class where everyone is playing at a different time from each other, and no one has an idea how to play an F. You kinda have to sit there in awe at the awful noise that comes forth.

In addition: Guitar feedback, and I mean, uncontrolled awful squeely "you feedback because you have your amp too loud" noise of death. The band I'm in plays with another guitarist sometimes who feedsback a whole lot everytime we play with him.
