THE MOST ANNOYING INSTRUMENT

Most female vocals annoy me deep, deep inside. Poorly played flutes and oboes too. If you play a high pitched instrument, keep the volume low if you are not very good or I will hurt you very, very badly. Oh, and we can't forget cheesey 80's synth strings, trumpet, brass, clap, and choir sounds. They are guarenteed by the manufacturer to brutally murder the legitimacy of any music.

I agree about the flutes and oboes - never was a fan. Strongly disagree about female vocals though. The only instrument a woman needs to play for me is a piano or a microphone. And if she does both...I'm caught. When you say choir sounds, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Stones comes to mind...and that song was made insanely good by the choir.

One thing that bothers me is bass drowning in effects. Or an electric with the drive all the way up on a crappy amp. Or an acoustic with too much high end. That's about it, I suppose. Pretty much love everything else.

I don't think it conjures up that assumption at all, and I've never heard anyone say that.

It does when your response was to someone saying that Springsteen and Joel shouldn't have sax in their songs. Then you saying "I agree, it sounds aweful in rock music" was implying that both Springsteen and Joel were using sax in rock music. Thus, I said that Joel isn't always playing for the rock genre.

Pretty much in a nutshell I was just disagreeing with you...and him.

Is it the instrument or the style of music played on it? I can see where really folky style hippie stuff annoys a lot of people but what about:

The intro to Over the Hills and Far Away? Going to California? Or the first days of the new album? Or some of Kottke's stuff? Or clapton unplugged? Or nirvana unplugged? Alice in Chains unplugged? Or "The Blessed Hellride" by Black Label Society?

funny, "folky hippie stuff" as in like, say donovan or jerry garcia or hot tuna, is not annoying to me. everything on your "good" list, is my "bad" list.. :hiding:

I get what he was saying. There's some rancid hippies out there who think writing songs in an acid haze on horribly intonated old Epiphones with more body cracks than Spring ice makes for good music.

Your bad list includes Zeppelin songs?

You said that my comment about Billy Joel "would also lead to the assumption that Billy Joel is the epitome of the sound of the rock music genre." I don't think that is the case at all. I never implied that Billy Joel is the epitome of anything, much less rock and roll. If you mean the assumption that he plays exclusively rock and roll, perhaps... However, Billy Joel has used the saxophone in a rock and roll context, and it has not pleased my ears or my heart :)
