As a kid I remember this song touching me. It was on one of my moms albums I would sneak and play the heck out of. The harmonies along with the stripped back melody and the story... maybe more bittersweet than mournful.
Love it. Can't listen without breaking down (old relationship drama, sigh).
I didn't read the whole thread, so pardon me if this was added, but hearing Bonnie Raitt brought this to mind. Hauntingly beautiful and deeply sad.
Now for something different, however somewhat tied to the OP by the unmistakable presence of Bobby Fripp.
The words to this are hopeful and beautiful, but the desperate tension in this song is so palpably dysfunctional that it is a hauntingly sad song to me.
Also, I played this song a lot during a very pivotal time when I was falling hopelessly and passionately in love with someone I wish I'd never met. So there's that.

I remember years ago when she'd come to town they would run an ad that said something like:
Mothers lock up your sons because Bonnie Raitt is coming to town!
That one too. I bought her tickets to go see Bonnie Raitt for her birthday, before it came around, she dumped me. Gave them to her anyway, because I simply couldn't go in the state I was then in. Had a wedding ring halfway paid off too. Ahh the perils of young love...
As long as we're with the king of clinical depression, we might as well have this one, too.
