(i also think its somewhat foolish to say that because boston has lots of good teams right now we are all "bandwagon fans." People love sports up here, we're just very fortunate to have a lot of success at the moment. deal with it.)

Those numbers don't reflect the "home court whistle". They reflect some of the worst officiating of the season.

a couple missed calls is one thing, but 38 free throws for one team just seems over the top. hearing that many whistles, regardless of the foul called just ruins the game for me.

it's too bad, the Celtics won game 1 fair and square, I was looking forward to a good game 2. both teams came out ready to play but when the lakers took the lead they started getting whistled to death. oh well, on to game 3...

THe celtics were clearly more aggresive in taking the ball to the basket, that always results in more fouls being called. The Lakers, including the golden boy, were mostly settling for outside shots.

Blaming a loss on the refs is weak. Boston's been battling foul trouble all year and all through the playoffs and look where they are.

I also seem to remember one instant replay that showed Kobe throwing his arms out trying to draw a call when there was clearly no contact. Maybe the refs are on to his act and are reluctant to make those calls because of it.

I'm sure the Lakers will get the favored calls in L.A; It kind of goes with the territory. I think the Lakers will take the next two games with game five going to the Celtics. From there it will be down hill for the Lakers.

I think GregC's post helps drawing the line between "shocking stats" for shocking stats' sake and reality. He is right, it is not nearly as dramatic when all the information is given.

It is a shame that the refs will be blamed for the end result at the end of these finals. I think the officiating sucks sometimes, but I also think it is not as bad as sports radio makes it out to be.

Seriously. Isn't this very idea what Dwyane Wade's career thus far has been built on?

I bet if you look at the roster of every NBA team there's at least one guy, usually a "shooting guard (notice how shooting guards aren't so good at shooting anymore?)," small forward or swingman, whose game is/was (was, say, in the case of Vince Carter) built on taking the ball straight to the rack and either dunking/getting layups or piling up the foul shots?

It's a great strategy these days. Even the slightest hand check draws the foul call, so perimeter defenders have a hard time keeping up. Most big guys won't be able to move over in time to draw the charge or get a block without making contact. Most refs have no clue where a defender's feet are in relation to the semicircle near the rim.

The idea of the Lakers - of all teams - complaining about calls is pretty comical. I've seen plenty of games where Kobe has a cot, a newspaper, and a grill set up at the free throw line, shooting 20 freebies or more. Even I, a long time Laker hater, was wondering why they didn't aggressively try for more shots closer to the rim in game 2. Odom has the skill to do this, but rarely does. I think the Lakers just got rattled and thrown off their game in game 2. When they're clicking, they penetrate and dish, getting a lot of easy shots for Gasol, Odom, and/or the Russian mafia. When they're not, they clank a bunch of jumpers from the outside with very litte ball movement.

A few years ago it might have been easy to dismiss Donaghy as a dirtball looking to throw others under the bus in exchange for leniency. But with dubious characters like Jose Canseco and Brian McNamee repeatedly proving more credible than their adversaries, a Donaghy letter to the court puts the onus on the NBA to prove it isn't true.

If Donaghy's allegations are true, it would certainly provide him with his own motivation to dip his beak into the barrel of corruption. If he knew the league was wrongly influencing games, wouldn't that embolden him to cash in on his own influence? If the system was already spoiled, what sanctity would he be violating?

The NBA may want Tim Donaghy to just disappear. But until it can convince its consumers that a bad call is just a bad call and not part of a larger scheme to create as many revenue-generating Game 7s as possible, the perception that something's amiss will never go away.

It didn't take long for the free throw situation to even out - however, the Lakers earned most of those calls as the Celts were a little flat-footed in the first half. Not a good night for anyone at the free throw line - some ugly shots from some guys who are usually automatic from the line.

One note about Laker fans - is "Boston Sucks" the best that they can do as far as chants go? Not only are you stealing another New York's chant; it belongs to a different sport. And if that wasn't bad enough, "Boston Sucks" is a pale imitation of the original "Yankees Suck." As the film and TV capital of the Western Hemisphere, you would hope for more creativity.

While I'm ragging on fans - Boston fans need to drop the "Beat LA." That chant was first used at the end of the 1982-83 Philly-Celtic Eastern Division finals that Philly was about to win in the old Boston Garden. It was support for your opponent to go on and win the championship - that is what made it special.
