The New Epiphone Thunderbird Pro V

One on the 'bay right now, BIN price is decent, could be just what you're looking for:

(I have no connection with the seller, just trying to help out another Epi pro fan)...and the ad has your pix...I had to buy my (natural oil IV pro) sight unseen...but they're pretty good basses...terrific for the price.

thanks for the link. Man, the sunburst looks really good, that's definitely what I want. I think I'm going to buy new, I'm a little skeptical of the ebay deal. So, with the corrected pickups, the B string output is fine, but how does the B string sound? I have both 35 and 34 scale fivers so I'm used to the sound of both. How would you guys rate the B string on this bass?

I've been thinking of doing a fretless Thunderbird, but haven't yet decided yet on which body to use. Originally I was thinking of a Tokai because they are set neck - but the Epi Pro's are mahogany and neck through. Also looks like the pup routs would be drop ins for origianl Gibsons pups. Anyone have a Gibson you can compare the pup routs too?

so, today i played one of the four strings.
always loved the look of thunderbirds but everytime i'd played them hated the feel and sound.
this one was one of the newies i beleive cos it had the new kind of bridge and a finish not like the old ones but not quite like the ones shown in this thread.
it played amazingly. a lot more sustain than i'm used to from them and.. it was just butter.
want one.. though i might have to swap out the pups.

I found part of the jack problem.
It's a plastic square pressed into a wood hole and the contacts fit into sleeves on three sides of it. The center(tip) sleeve on mine had pushed back to where to tip was only touching but not secured! I also found a crap solder connection on one of the leads to the jack(resoldered it). It still may get relocated to the face since there is a router circle for either it OR adding a midrange tone :) .
I'll report on the results.

For those not wanting to swap this jack or relocate it(I don't trust it), you could put a drop of JB Weld at 3 locations to secure the contact inserts. That may happen if the jack isn't relocated.

Same thing happened to me! I had a Switchcraft stereo jack laying around... Just had to bend the prongs in to fit the whole was all. It fit snug and, along with the plate, it's secure.

The only other adjustment I had to make was after putting Elixir Super Lights on it... The neck had too much relief in it, even when I "loosened" the truss rod all the way. I thought I was doomed to going back to standard guage strings until I realized the thing had a dual action (aka two-way) truss rod in it! Turned a little more counter-clockwise until the rod caught again, went 1/4 turn more, let set a day, and perfect-o!

No other problems since.

Just pulled the trigger on a Pro 5...took advantage of the Christmas Day 15% discount at Musician's Friend. Got the bass, Epi hard shell case, and Ed Freidland slap book/DVD all for $600.00 shipped...not bad at all.

Hopefully it already has the corrected pickups in it, if not I'll quickly send to Epiphone for replacement.

edit: oh yeah, in Vintage Sunburst

You should be OK. The one here came from MF when they had their 20% off sale a while back.

More PICS are around the corner.
Pics onstage(cheap cam) and off(son's cam).....should be by Sunday PM.

Man, I am really in doubt in getting a 5 string TBird custom made... or some other model, like a BC Rich mockingbird, or a Warwick Buzzard... VERY different basses, as far as I know, but I just love them so much! Its hard to decide!

I play in a Thrash Metal band (Post Mortem - Brazil), and definitely need a Metal or Rock n Roll bass! Any suggestions?

By the way, this Tbird Pro V is surely giving me some GAS right now... :bassist:
